I just upgraded to 1.9 and during the upgrade it started giving MySQL connection errors "Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts." I tried using the IP address and still no go. I tried changing the computer name and still the same thing. I even tried uninstall and reinstall. Help!

Did you get an "Invalid handle 32" error before the problems? I got that while upgrading to 1.9, and it seems MySQL did not install correctly, maybe the same problem. After several full cleanup reintalls of both 1.8 and 1.9 still failing, I came to the conclusion that disabling my virus checker's real-time protection was what finally allowed my to install successfully. You can look in this thread also, that guy got around his issue by doing a manual install of MySQL. Major PITA.
