If I understood correctly I have had the same problem. Try to disabled VMR9 in directshow. It worked for me. This solution was posted somewhere is this forum..
I've uninstalled MP, clean install of 0.2.3 final and selected EVR in XP to display my films. Now all works fine, but i can't see wmv films... but that is another history...
