I've set up a PC with Powerstrip to run on a CRT TV at 1024x576@50hz and 854x480@60hz.

Obviously I can only calibrate to one resolution though. In UI Calibration, should I just adjust it to fill the screen at 1024x576? What about Screen Calibration, as it says it's best to leave everything at 0,0 but there's quite a bit of overscan like that.

Unfortunately I've only got a 14" 4:3 TV to test this with, so I can't see exactly how it will look on a 16:9 TV (which is what it will be used with).

    Hi doveman

Each CRT TV is different... meaning the overscan settings will be different. I don't think you'll be able to configure this properly without access to the TV MP will be used with.

I think you're probably right, but I still need to know what the correct procedure is so I can tell my brother what to do to calibrate it (I won't be able to do it for him).

Re: Need advice on screen calibration for two resolutions

I'd really appreciate if someone could explain how to handle this, so that I can explain it to my brother when he's down for Christmas and not look completely clueless ;)

OK, Christmas has been and gone but I'm still clueless about how to do this, so if anyone could assist me that would be great.

    Hi doveman

I think unless you can test this on the actual TV then any calibration you attempt is going to be complete guess work - you're unlikely to get an authoritative answer except "try it and see". To me it seems like a very unusual requirement in the first place but if I were you I would try to set for 1024x576 and see if I could use IFC to expand the lower res material automatically.

    Hi mm1352000

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I'm not trying or expecting to be able to properly calibrate it. I'm just trying to work out the correct procedure.

It's not about the resolution of the material really, just that 60hz material needs to be run at 854x480@60hz and 50hz material needs to be run at 1024x576@50hz. It's something to do with square pixels which I don't entirely understand, but I got a lot of advice about this from sneals2000, who seems to know his stuff, over here Tweaking VGA->SCART RGB timings - AVS Forum

I've managed to grab some screenshots over VNC to illustrate the problem. Obviously they're not a perfect representation of what's on the screen, but they're close and take the TV out of the equation. If I could guarantee that the GUI will always run at 1024x576 obviously I'd only need to do the GUI calibration at that, but I don't know that. As you can see, I've calibrated at 1024x576 with a 64,24 offset and all the edges fit. At 854x480 MP reports 854x534 and I haven't calibrated to that as well as I don't think MP allows it to be calibrated to two different resolutions.

With the Screen Calibration, at 1024x576 the OSD (and the subtitles) show in the right position, but at 854x480 again MP reports 854x534 and the OSD is pushed off-screen. However, testing again later it reported the correct 854x480 and the OSD looks correct.

At 1024x576 the movie (Limitless) looks right with equal black bars above and below and the OSD in the right place. If I then switch to 854x480, it goes out of whack, with a larger black bar above and the OSD in the wrong position. However I tested again later starting in 854x480 before switching to 1024x576 and this time the picture stayed correct in both resolutions.
