Did you try to ping the server using the -t parameter and check if the connection is stable

also, make sure you have the latest driver for your NIC installed

are you on GB LAN?

are the ip adresses static?

i'm not very familiar with using a file server as a router (i prefer a dedicated router/firewall to do the job), but a client of mine had a similar problem recently. the server was only accessible from time to time and not at all over the internet via vpn. he was missing an entry for a default gateway on the server. hence my suggestions:

try adding a default gateway in the server settings as well. also, try a different dns server (for instance, one your provider makes available).

make sure you have simple filesharing activated on the server (and the clients if you want to access ressouces on a client from the server) and also make sure all your clients and server are members of the same workgroup or domain.

generally, i would advice not to mix functions of servers: use a dedicated filer server and a dedicated device for routing/nat. router/nat/firewalls aren't that expensive any more. (recommended setup: internet -> modem -> router/firewall/nat -> giga-switch -> clients and server)

on a sidenote: could it be possible that the htpc is making the connection via wireless adapter?

I have a stable ping andt a gigabit network with a gigabyte switch.
Ping is stable.
I am running on Vista with all PC's in the network.
at quite random intervals playback just stops and I have to wait with a frozen image. Sometimes playback restarts after some minutes.
Other occasions I have to stop plaback and jump to the main menue screen , select video and the file . start it playing again and jump forward till I am at te desired position and from there continue playback.
