So I'm modernizing my HT a bit. I'm going to get a new LCD, probably a Sharp (1080p). I've ordered a new motherboard, CPU etc. I'm going to use the new 680G chipset from AMD and give the integrated video a try. Yes I know the chipset struggles at 1080p, I'll cross that bridge later. Or use Core codec or something...

So my question is, to play back HD content like x264, .mkv files etc what codecs should I go for? As well I would like to have an upconverting DVD player working on this thing. Any guides or recommendations? Everything I've found so far sounds pretty discouraging.

:D

Amazing! I'm the first person to do HD content. I feel like such a pioneer...

I found 2 sets of codecs that will work well for all situations: CCCP codecs (free) and Nvidia Purevideo (not free, but very high quality)

have you checked out k-lite codec packages

may have something in there to do HD content
