Yes, I think it will. Might seem counter intuitive but that's the way it works.

This has probably been suggested as an improvement many times, but it really needs to be addressed. I'm no developer, but it seems a database of shows recorded could be maintained and checked -- even a heavy user's history would not grow so large as to be a burden.
It is not about the size of the history or that the database is not maintained/checked. Recording details are stored and TV Server will know it is re-recording an episode when it does it. The point is that when the file is not present TV Server consciously chooses to re-record. That is a design decision. As far as I know the original developers made that decision and it hasn't be changed since.

What would have to be done to make it an option? We do need more options, after all.

The "TV Wish list" plugin claims to be able to do this, but it doesn't for me.
Obviously you'd still need season/episode info because without that there is no sure fire way to determine whether two episodes are identical or different... but aside from that, I pass. If you want to follow up, ask the plugin developer (huha I think) why it doesn't work for you.

I was only mentioning it for OP's benefit, since the name does not reflect all of what it does -- and I do have episode info for most shows.

Lack of tv series support in tv database is obvious. I can see two options:
-add new table to mp database with seriesinfo. At least seriesname, tvdbid, posterlink and stringlist of previously recorded episodes could be stored there.
-manage tvseries through mp-tvseries database since all of us have it installed.

I've been using nextpvr with Schedules Direct for about a year now. It's first run only feature is pretty solid. Maybe MP should add better support for Schedules Direct?

The plugin doesn't seem to be compatible with this current version of MediaPortal. Even if it was, MediaPortal doesn't make use of the first run attribute. It's more than a little frustrating. I'm surprised that in 2013 it's so difficult to find a pvr solution that can reliably skip recording reruns. I can't see how this wouldn't be a requirement for anyone setting up an HTPC.

I can't comment on Schedules Direct since I've never tried it, but if you use mc2xml and xmltv you can use a mc2xml command line option to marks shows as new or NOT(new). With "-a" all new shows add a " *" to the end of the Title, With "-b" all NOT(new) show add a " *" to the end of the Title. When you setup recordings you can use this to select if you want new or NOT(new) shows. Since I already had a lot of schedules that did not have " *" in the Title I used the "-b" command line option to skip recording NOT(new) shows. I needed to tweak the recordings for a couple shows like the "10PM News" that are treated as NOT(new). This is not as convenient as the BeyondTV scheduling that lets you select if you want to record "all shows" or "new shows" but gets the job done. There is similar info in the following thread.

Of course all this relies on good peg data. Mp cannot just 'know' when a program is being shown for the first time
