The layout is much better without the grey area.
I think the second one is the best from the new layout. You need too keep the 3D view at the background. The second one gives more a room feeling and is much nicer than the first one who looks a bit flat.

I really welcome alternative navigation solutions - this could really make MP stand out in comparizon to MCE.

Is it possible to make the transisions between "thumbnails" animated like in OS X menubar?

The problem with alternative solutions unfortunately is the flexibility. You kind of have to code your way into a corner with the basic home if you want it to be something different, and all the other quirks here and there are one of the reasons most themes follow the list menu format. It also tends to utilize space the best.
