No Audio in MP, WMP crashes, VLC works fine (1 Viewer)

First of all, I would've attached an MP log, but where does 1.0 keep those?

Now, the issue.

Last Friday, completely out of the blue, I noticed there was no Audio with a bunch of AVI files I have. Some of these I played less than a week ago just fine, and now they wouldn't give any sound. The picture is still fine, it's just the Audio that's missing. All of these files are encoded in XViD (Unfortunately I don't have any other files to test it with at the moment).

This could've been a driver or hardware issue, if it wasn't for the fact that DVD's played from within MP work perfectly fine, and the VLC player plays those AVI files perfectly fine as well.
What makes it even weirder, is that WMP crashes when I try to play these AVI files. I'll stress it again, VLC plays them just fine; and all of these AVI files I watched last monday. Nothing has changed since then; no different drivers, no different settings, not even a Windows update.

One last note: My surround set is connected to my HTPC through a Coaxial cable.



Does anybody have any idea what's going on here? Because I am at a complete loss; I went over all the settings and I can't find any problems. I just don't see how in 4 days without changes it can break like that; and VLC still works fine :|

VLC is a really bad comparator as it has built in codecs for just about every codec ever. WMP is much better as it uses DirectShow, like MediaPortal. As WMP is crashing I would suggest you try re-installing xvid.

Failing that you'll find the logs under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\log\. Alternatively you can open the folder by selecting 'Open log directory' from the 'User Config files' dropdown on the top left in Configuration.

I had this using the Xvid codec a little while ago, replaced it with FFDShow Tryouts and enabled its codec for xvid and everything worked again, same as you, no idea what caused it, but it did stop after a Windows Defender update !!

Also download\run filmerit, just to check for any other filter errors.

Why should we use the built-in player when we can use VLC? Don't get me wrong - MediaPortal is a great product, but VLC is awesome when it comes to movies and such.

Okay, bringing up my old post.

After lots of fiddling with settings and filters, I decided to simply reinstall my Audio driver (Realtek, don't know which chip exactly). Fair enough, all went well, still had sound in all players. Loaded up MP, no audio anywhere. Log tells me it couldn't find the selected output, so I went into configuration to discover the output is still there, but named slightly different.

Fixed the outputs for all the relevant sections (DVD, Movie and Music in my case, haven't set up the TV-Tuner at all yet), and almost everything works again. There's a few quirks though:
- I can't select FFDSHOW as audio decoder for DVDs; It's my decoder for all other audio however, just for DVDs it doesn't work. Not a big deal, but weird.
- Even though I don't use it, WMP still crashes on the same video files as before.

Luckily, neither bothers me much, so it's all fine. Vista must've replaced the audio driver at some point, with an M$ one, which proves to be utter shite once again
