A setting i remember from 0.2.3.0 is in the mediaportal.xml (open with notepad) there is a setting use "TS File Source Filter" yes by default, try changing to no, see if that makes a difference.

I've attached a screenie of the graphedit output.

I can't see anything in the mediaportal xml file mentioning TS file source filter, so I'm guessing that was specific to the older version the OP is using.

Just reread your previous post, stating files will not play in WMPlayer neither, check and see if you have any filter errors with filmerit (link below, padlock unlocks repair ability).

Graph shows file should play, but if WMP will not play this, then its back to the way windows handles its filters.

Might be worth downloading PowerDVD8 trial, just for the filters, see if any difference.

Filmerit found 5 errors, all of which wanted to delete registry keys. Let it do it's thing. No difference (not that I was expecting it to if it was deleting keys).

I still think it's weird that just this one particular file doesn't want to play. Can't see any reason for it. This is a clean install of XP from last weekend (slipstreamed SP3 install).

I'll give powerdvd a try tomorrow, although it seems to me that's bypassing the real issue somewhere along the line. Time for bed now.

Actually, thinking about it, I should re-adjust my reply a bit.

All the above is true to the best of my knowledge. What I haven't mentioned is, I'm getting this same playback problem on two independant machines.

The machine I've been testing playing this file back on isn't the machine that recorded the file. That machine is SP2 (patched) with all the same codecs installed, plus at least one other (nero codecs).

Thought that info might be significant.

Do you have sound when you open it in gspot? At least gspot said MPA can play the sound and your graph also uses MPA, so it should work.
The TS File Source can be identified in GraphEdit by right clicking the upper left filter (with the file name) and then clicking "configure".
I agree to Paranoid Delusion that this seems to be another problem, but I think it's worth checking anyway. I would try this before installing new filter, because perhaps it's not necessary.

Ok, so I was going to download PowerDVD, but as I got redirected to CNET and the download speed was 25k/sec, I couldn't be arsed to wait 2 hours

I decided to try something else instead that had fixed a problem with another mpeg that MP wouldn't play properly (this one wasn't recorded by MP though, it was recorded by DigiTV).

Using VideoReDo, I opened the file, then clicked Tools --- Trim and copy source file. Once VRD had finished, the MPEG file played perfectly!

I've no idea what VRD actually did during this operation apart from shrinking and copying the file (which makes sense from the option name ), but Dexter now plays as it should within WMP and, more importantly, MediaPortal.
