Nubie Install Question (1 Viewer)

Sorry for what I am sure is a fairly basic question. But I have searched the forum and have not been able to find and answer. So here goes...
OS - Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit
CPU - AMD Fx 8150 3.60 GHz
MEM - 16 GB
I have the latest version of MP installed as of 6/10/12.
I am in the US. I have Direct TV. I am using an digital to analog converter to connect from my satellite box to my tv tuner. (This setup work fine with Windows Media Center.) The conerter box is set to channel 4.
MP sees channel 4 and I can tune to it without any problem and using my satellite remote I can change the channel on the satellite box and the channel changes in MP.
I do have an IR Blaster hooked up and
connected to the satellite box. (Again, this worked under Media Center)
I have 2 questions/problems.
1. How do I get MP to see all of my cable channels?
2. Once MP can see all of my channels how do/can I get my remote working. It is a MC remote and works for everything except changing channels.

Please be gentle as this is my first post and sorry for the basic question.

Hi,

not sure whether I have fully understood your set up.....
You have a satelite receiver hooked up via a analog TV card and this works. What is the picture quality here? Why don't you use a sat receiver card in your system? Should give a much better quality, is one box less on the shelf and easier with remote integration....There are dual and even quad receiver cards available to watch/record several channels simultaneously - that is at least for European satelites.......
On top you want to have Cable TV hooked up to your system?Analog or digital?
You will need a Cable tuner card (analog or digital) next to the existing analog TV card you already have.

Do not use a MC remote, so can'tr help on that

Hi Flintstone,

The TV tuner is one that I have had for awhile. It is a Happauge WinTV HVR-1800 (Model 78xxx, Combo ATSC/QAM).
It has the following connectors:
FM In: coax
TV In: coax
Ant In: coax
S-Video In
Audio left and right (RCA connectors)

The satelite reciever is new, just switched from cable to Direct TV.
It has the followin connectors on the back of it:
1/8 inch jack for external remote
Audio left and right (RCA)
Video out (RCA)
10 pin dinn AV connector
HDMI

My digital to analog box has:
On one side: Video In (RCA) Audio left and right (RCA)
On the other side: TV out (coax) Ant In (coax)
There is also a slide switch to select either channel 3 or 4. (I have it set to 4)

I have 3 RCA cables going from my satelite box (video, audio left & right) going to my digital to analog box. Then coming out of the TV out via coax to my tuner card TV in.

Picture quality is great. No issues there.
I was not aware of being able to get a satelite reciever card for my computer. Can you please give me a link? Cost could be an issue.

And I am sorry. I mispoke on item 1

It should have read
1. How do I get MP to see all of my satelite channels?

Hi Rusty,
first of, there is no sat card for DirecTV, as there isn't one for Dish either.
Second, check out the IRSS thread for your blaster problems,
and
third. you might think about a ScheduleDirect account for your channels.
Just search for the thread in the forum.

Edit:
Also, check for the info how to ad s-video or composite to your channel line up, you will need that to control your stb via MP.

I do have a Schedule Direct account set up and working. I did that this morning.

One question about your post what is "stb"?

If your HVR is supported by MP, hook up your antenna cable directly to it. This should make your digital converter box obsolete, except you want to use it as a second ATSC tuner,

Use the s-video and analog audio out on your stb, if the 10 pin AV out is really s-video, otherwise use the yellow composite connection, and hook those up directly to the s-video/ composite in on your HVR,

i'm assuming that you're using your digital box to get OTA (Over The Air) ATSC channels.

Thanks for the information.
My digital box is a Direct TV sat. box only. I do not have any kind of OTA box/antenna. I did some checking and the 10 pin AV is not s-video, it splits into 5 RCA connectors. I am still trying to see if there is a s-video to composite video cable.

Hmm,
could it be that your digital to analog box is just a video to RF converter? Means, that's the way you're hooking up your tv because there are no s-video or rca inputs on your tv?
You don't have to search for a s-video to composite cable, the yellow rca out is your composite connection.
The 10 pin out seems to be a component out, which means , you will have three connectors for the video, red, blue and green, and two audio, red and white. Since your HVR can't capture component, and your stb doesn't supply s-video, that leaves us with the composite, yellow, red and white only. But this is still a better quality than converting it to RF.
If your tv doesn't have s-video or composite in, hook the tv up via the tv coax out on the stb, and the HVR via composite.
