Since I am new to MP and in the proccess to install it for the first time I have a simple question:

In the documentation for First Installation the DScaler/Gabest MPA/MPV MPEG2 decoders are recommended to be enabled. I am going to use Nvidia 8600GTS with PureVideo HD ... do I un-enable Dscaler/Gabest ... or :confused:

    Hi and welcome :)
    No need to "un-enable" anything. Just follow the recommendation. You will later choose you preferred codec for TV, videos, DVD etc.

    i guess you are refering to ::this:: ?

    these options just mean that the codecs get installed. if you want to use purevideo HD then run "MediaPortal Configuration" after the installation and select the codecs you prefer in the DVD / television / Movie sections.

    i suggest that you install both codecs because especialy MPV/MPA are very useful for testing when you run into problems. :)

    Yes - that's what I referred to.
    What is your experience about decoders to use ... I have only digital channels (most MPEG2 and some MPEG4) that I want to decode ... using Nvidia PureVideo HD with hw decoder on 8600GTS I felt was a good option ... but maybe there are better solutions.
    The DVB-S2 cards I am looking at are Technotrend HDTV S2-3200 and FloppyDTV S2 - any recommendations ?

    i am using
    video (mpeg2) = MPV
    audio = MPA
    h.264 = coreavc 1.6

    definitly the floppy-s2, i had the opportunity to receive one of the pre-series models when we added the support for it in TV-Server.
    the hardware, the driver and firmware are top notch. and the support of digital everywhere is just great.

    befor i bought my first floppy-s i have been usingcards from KNC, twinhan and TT. and what i encountered there during one year makes it impossible for me to suggest their hardware.
    there is a very good reason why these cards are that cheap.

    if you want a card which just works, and where the manufacturer knows what support means, then buy the floppy-dtv :)

    Hi zkab,

    Since you have the Nvidia 8600 GTS card you may want to try Cyberlink PowerDVD h264 codec. It has enabled the acceleration of h264 decoding in the HW of the gfx card. If you use CoreAVC this decoding has to be done by the CPU instead and it requires a lot of horse powers...

    Hello Peter,

    Thanks for your input but I haven't bought the graphic card yet ... I hesitate between Nvidia and ATI ... don't know which one is best buy for the bucks and which technology is future-safe :confused:
    Also saw somewhere that CoreAVC H.264 will give GPU support in the future ... will it be on both Nvidia and ATI or not

    the problem is that nothing is realy future-safe these days :mad:

    i have to say that i am quite happy with my system (core2duo6600 + ATI HD2600 + coreavc 1.6.5.0).
    playing 1080p videos is no issue at all :)

    quite some team members report image and gui corruption with some combinations of nvidia gpu / driver versions.
    i am using only ATI cards here and do not have any issues. but i am also not using HW-accel. :)
