So - I hardly feel like a newbie but I am "new" here so this might have been addressed already.

First off - running RC3 on WHS (I know its not supported but don't think this is a WHS issue)

I have a group of movies - in particular some avi's from the Land Before Time collection for children. In full screen mode - they are just black screen with full audio - but if I go to the home screen while playback is going - I can see the picture in the preview window at bottom left just fine - back to full screen and blackness.

I have over 3,000 movies on my MP server and these are the only ones I have noticed this with - basically they are unwatchable in MP.

Any ideas as to what I should try?

I've got the exact same problem with ISOs mounted using Daemon tools. This error started with RC3, everything worked fine with previous version, and for some reason I can see the thumbnail version (most of the time, sometimes they are black, with parts of the movie showing in a thin line around the edges), but I can't see full screen - it comes out black, with full audio.

What gives?

3 things to consider, video card drivers, COdecs and hardware acceleration(DXVA). I have had simalar issues in that past and found my onboard video card with DXVA would work in windowed mode but not full screen producing black screen. Turn it off and all fine. Just some things based on my experience.

I've had lots of problems with codecs doing weird things. Some of them produced black screens when going to the root menu. Some of them brought up the root menu but I couldn't click on any menus. Some of them produced black screens when playing the movie and all I got was audio. I finally got Hoborg's stand alone filters to work. https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/offtopic-57/stand-alone-filters-mediaportal-44614/ I'm running version 2.5, looks like he updated it again. I'd give it a try.

Thing is, all I changed was updating to rc3. My guess then would be that rc3 somehow reverted to using a codec that doesn't work?

I never used the old versions, but I had lots of problems using the builtin codec. And using ATI's codec. And ffshow. Give it a try, you can always uninstall it if it doesn't work.

if you uninstall the old version of MP, then the config will revert to the default settings MPV & MPA if these were selected at install. You may want to also have a look at using a program called graphedit (google to find) which will display what codec is in use when you are displaying videos. Although you may have selected a codec in MP, the "merits" of another codec maybe overiding it.
