I was sitting on my laptop talking on msn, as you do lol. When all of a sudden my Home Theatre PC switched on by itself, from power off state it booted into windows and into media portal, and thats it. It's not on a schedule, nothings set to record. Its actually kinda worrying.

Well if you treat your hardware like that it's not surprising they're starting to rebel. You'd better watch out for your toaster!!

lol no i was sitting, working on my laptop. not litterally sitting on it
It may be that there was a momentary power interruption. You can set most computers to re-start after a power interruption. This is done in the BIOS. Yours may be set to do this.
