That sounds good, but there are some major drawbacks to doing that.
1. you would have to have custom builds for each emulator - most don't have the source available. and even if they did, window mode will almost always be slower than fullscreen mode. I had a custom build for mame, but they made changes after .105 that changed how certain things worked. I never could figure out how to make my custom build work after these changes were made.
2. also some of the emulators behave differently when the don't have focus. Some lose sound, some lose the gamepads, etc...
3. myGames allowed you to have custom audio, video, and gamepad settings for each game. while this isn't all that difficult to do, it is also build specific.
4. at the time I did allow you to use MESS in the later versions of myGames, but the compatibility wasn't all what it was made out to be. Maybe it is better now, I don't know.
5. controlling the emulators to allow you to map the same combos for them all is very difficult to do. MAME for example uses directinput for the input, so you have to stuff the keyboard using sendinput. This is a lot harder to do, however about a year ago I did manage to figure out a way to do it.
I have been working on and off on a guide for setting emulation for meedio without the use of myGames. The goal of the guide was to allow you to have the same keys mapped to save, load, and exit. Also, I documented how you can setup usb thumbdrives so that you can save and load games from them.
It's not completed and is still a wip, but you can check it out at Emulation & Meedio 101 It is targeted towards meedio, but some it should apply to any frontend.
