Older MP version for very low spec machine? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Am a big fan of MP using it for quite a while now without issues and still using XBMC too. I've recently decided to resurrect a very old laptop in the hope of getting it to run as a music/photos/weather only front-end. I realise that this is a big step backwards in capabilities for MP but my ideal solution would be to maintain the same interface that everyone around the house is already accustomed to, hence the desire to use MediaPortal for this PC too.

My problem is that it is a really old machine: PII 400MHz, 256MB RAM and a built-in NeoMagic video card that doesn't support DirectX hardware instructions. Obviously this is far from capable of running MP as it is but I'm wondering if there are older versions possibly in SVN that would be capable if running on this machine without having to do any video playback/recording at all.

It may well be that it doesn't make sense at all to try get MP running on this but I doubt I'm the only one who is in this position of wanting a consistent UI across all devices in the house. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be more than grateful. Maybe it makes no sense at all to try get an older version to run on this machine given the really limited feature set I want (music/weather/photos only) but it's worth asking.

Thanks,
Mick

Older Versions for download?

I guess that's kind of my problem. Available SVN builds only go back a month or so...

Much appreciated. Will try that this evening and give an update just in case others are in a similar boat.

Thanks!

No luck I'm afraid. DirectX hardware still a requirement on 1.3. It appears that the only way to get anything rendered at all is to install the SDK which makes it totally unuseable... Ah well, it was worth a try!

Since you are looking to have a "music/photos/weather" front-end I would suggest taking a different approach, due to the fact MP has a REQUIREMENT of needing a DX9 video card. It seems you are trying to make MP fit your needs and sometimes that is not th ebest direction!

I have a question before we start, is your music and photos on one computer? If yes, then I would have you look into ::Jinzora:: for your music, then I would have you check into ::Jalbum:: - lastly try out ::WeatherWatcher::. Now, to tie this all together and to have some type of front-end on a under powered computer I would suggest purchasing ::QuickMenu4:: basic version is $45.00USD - I had used the DOS version for my family in the past and NeoSoft produced quality software and I think with some graphics placed in the right spot it could look like MP... in some ways.

If someone has a better approach I'm sure mickm is wanting to hear it. After all a solution is the best advice to give a person.
