I am cutting the cable and am wondering if MP can record over the air TV. I understand that I need a tuner but I would need MP to be able to control the tuner. I also will need an online program guide (which I believe I have), The question is, can MP control a tuner and if so, how?

    Many thanks, Dave

    The answer is: yes.

I'm not really sure what you want to know. It just... works.

I wonder which tuner I need to use. Is there a collection of tuners with which MP can correctly communicate? Where do I find details about setting up such communications between MP and the tuner? Many thanks Dave

    You're over-thinking things. :)
Setting up an OTA tuner is much simpler than the Colossus you've been using up until now.

Any WMC-compatible ATSC tuner will do.
Hauppauge is a reputable brand with lots of options:
    http://hauppauge.com/

SiliconDust has a network-connected tuner which is also very good:
    https://www.silicondust.com/product/hdhomerun-connect/

    Choose one that suits. :)

As I said before: it just works.
    You scan in your channels:

...configure EPG (which you said you've already got sorted), and then you start watching.

Thanks MM. I was thinking that the set top box was tuning the signal (ie selecting a channel) and the Colossus was processing the video.

    Is this not correct?

That is correct for your current setup.
...but an OTA setup is easier because you don't need an STB or the Colossus. The tuner tunes the signal... and that's it.

How do these tuners get the signal to the TV? I don't see much detail on the output they produce?

    Thanks, Dave

As usual with an HTPC, you connect the PC's video and audio outputs to the TV's inputs.

So to clarify, the Tuner is essentially replacing the Colossus.

Thanks for all the help. Now, the last question is about the IR remote to control MP. I am currently using a Hauppauge remote, so if I obtain an Hauppauge tuner should the remote work as is? Thanks again, Dave
