I have not tested this, so I don't know.

I've got my server set to update the EPG every 30min, update while timeshifting or idle and its managed to reschedule last minute changes to some recordings automagically where the broadcasters updated the EPG in time. Bit extreme though ;)

Freeview+ does what's needed. Since its basically just monitoring the EIT Now&Next stream it could be worth adding even for countries without Freeview+ broadcasts. I have no problem with a tuner constantly pulling EIT data even when idle.

    automagically
    Nice word :)

Downloading EPG all the time is really only practical on an always-on server though. On a stand-alone "VCR replacement" machine like mine, it's set to hibernate when idle and only wake up for a recording. I suppose in theory it could wake up early, check the EPG, then deal with any changes as necessary...

The best thing to do would be to get all live sport quarantined on its own channels ;)

Which is what Freeview+ specifies: wake up in time to be scanning the EPG EIT data 10min before a recording, updating timers as well. On delayed programmes it either reschedules from an updated full EPG or waits up to 2 hours for the Now&Next to signal programme start - good enough for most sports overruns.

That said its far from perfect even when the broadcasters bother implementing it properly and hard to detect which channels use it. Prepadding is still needed and that stops it being trivial to implement.

You could set the pre-wakeup time to be earlier, but not the pre-record, otherwise any shared channels will not record, ie BBC3\4\Virgin1 etc, as these only start broadcasting 2 minutes earlier than their start times.

So you would alter settings within this screen sshot-48.jpg
