I know that's silly. That's why I looked into using hibernation rather than sleep mode. Seems to work. I have quite a few new insights on this. I'm still testing to confirm all and will then write a summary.

There is one thing that is not clear to me and that is how the heartbeat from client to server works. I think the server went into standby once even though a client was active. Does a client send a heartbeat to the server whenever MP is running, or only when using TV or only when 'send WOL ...' is selected, or ...? How often is the heartbeat send, what is the timeout for the server on the heartbeat?

i dont like hibernation cause in my case it takes quite longer to come to live ! howerver in your case i can understand.

I belive its tv section which sends the heartbeat but maybe some dev can confirm this.

I havent had time to put together all my findings. i will try to write a report when i can.

however i am still under some trouble as to sending the server to sleep also during the day and waking it up when a client is online, and keeping it awake whilst its there.

btw. remember the webcam test...the server did not go to sleep in 2 days of test because i guess the webcam was connected. so thats also interesting.

Of course, but since I have dedicated clients, that are usually off, it takes a while for them to power up and start MP as well. I send the WOL with a batch from startup so the server can get going long before MP is up on the client.

I'm not sure yet what happens if a client is in standby, the server goes into hibernate and then I bring the client out of standby. All part of further investigation and tweaking.

Using hibernation instead of standby on the server should save me about 100 € per year in electricity.

In mp configuration>plugins>powerscheduler has to be enabled and there you can setup when mp should go into standby. Note that there is an option that if mp client is on home screen then it can go to sleep.
It should keep tv server even if not watching tv, that is what in my case. I would check mp client logs and tv server logs if it is the case.

thanks for that. please confirm the "keep server even in not watching tv" part if you can so i dont go crazy :p

and how about keeping it awake for computers in the network NOT using mp??? i know there is a bandwidth option but it must be hard to tell if someone has an open document (example word document) from the server and working on it. im sure bandwidth limit is not reached.

We need a little stand alone utility that can send the heartbeat to the server. Of course this only works when MP TV-server is installed and running on that server.

Or you must start some kind of process on the server and add that to the list in the TV-server power scheduler. I recall seeing a thread about this somewhere.

Or would it work if you send a WOL every so often. Does the receipt of a WOL reset the MP TV-Server power scheduler standby timer?

i agree on the need of a standalone application. we just need to find it, although im sure it must be very easy to program it. it should just send a package every x minutes to the mac address provided. if as you say the timer is reset by this.

    so...

    Client with mp running TV.
-Build in solution to keep server alive
-Build in solution to wake up server

Client with mp NOT running TV (to be tested)
    - As vecnar said, mp should keep server alive even if not using tv part.
    - Batch to send WOL package using a batch to be run when waking form standby.
    maybe...http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/166809-task-scheduler-wake-up-computer.html

    Client without mp
    - Batch to send WOL package using a batch to be run when waking form standby.
    - Standalone utility which sends a heartbeat or something to keep server awake.
maybe... Does Network Share Activity Keep Computer Awake?

    SERVER (in my case)
Use setpower software to create power plans and wake up computer at 10am in the morning.
    - to do... make server go to sleep also during the day if no clients connected.

i will try to add more info when i have time and when i get to test more stuff, help is welcome.

little update with a not very professional data analysis i have done.

i just wanted to get a mean value as well as a max value.

also some useful information about power save during night.
