Also networking wise i take it the clients make the connection to the server so where VLANS are involved aslong as there is aclong as there are ACL rules allowing connection to that server we are good to go? no need for multicast?
No need for multicast. Each client opens its own stream.

The card arrived today so once a couple of projects are out the way we will start on this one.
Just curious: is it the DigitalNow Quad, or something else?

Oh yes I forgot the network issue. How many clients are you thinking about? Does the server has several network adapters?

mm1352000: You're right but what I meant is that etsmc wants to have many many clients and I want to help him not to forget anything.
Nothing is worse than when he everything works in testing phase and than it doesn't in productivity with 50 users. (see Diablo III :p )

But you are right. Every normal cpu should be enough for 20 streams. It's only the large amount of possible clients which makes me sweat when I read such posts. :)

Yes the card is a DigitalNow Quad, i had seen a post on here that someone has it working. I think the only issue i might face with the card is signal quality.

How many clients.. well that will depend on how well it works and if there is any uptake.. if its just staff we are talking 100+ but cant see them all being on it at the same time...
If they want students to have it thats 1400+ which i think might be an issue.

Network card at the moment is a single 1Gb but again if testing is good and it is useable we will build a specific machine and throw hardware at it..[/quote]

well other projects are out the way..
Card is installed and so is mediaportal and the TV Server. tried scanning for channels and got nothing o_O
found the culprit to be the splitter we brought, without the splitter the tv server shows signal strength and quality as full.. (y)
so we now either have to find another place to put the server on its own ariel point or get a booster/splitter.
As for the TV Client we will probably have one of our guys design and code one up for us.. had a few ideas with limiting student access and such but will get the thing working first..

right found another antenna in the school and we get an acceptable signal quality on most channels although we dont get any of channel 7 (australia Freeview). i have however followed a couple of guides and setup the MPExtender and WebPortal so now we can access the tv guide and schedule recordings from anywhere(y)
Now that we can get it to record we will start the setup of the automation of removing commercials and converting the files to a format we can use in the school.

But so far so good. excelent product even just for the TV-Server backend is great.
    :D
