Synopsis::

Cannot play XviD files in MediaPortal.
This is a recent problem. Up until ver. 0.2.0.2 XviD's played without problem. However, I have been unable to play XviD's since. When I select an XviD, the MediaPortal screen just refreshes.

XviD's will not play in WMP10 either - I get error "This pin cannot use the supplied media type". However, they will play using Media Player Classic. Koepi's XviD decoder was default decoder. No codec packs were installed.

I have tried the following:
- Using different Movie codec (tried them all)
- Uninstall and reinstall Koepi's codec
- Reinstall DX9.0c
- Reinstall WMP10
- Install FFDShow (current version)

So, I'm stumped! Any suggestions (prefer not to reformat etc.)?

If it will not work in WMP, then it will not work in MediaPortal.

So when you uninstalled the xvid codec, did you try reboot, before reinstalling.

Also check that WMP is default, for that type of file.

Saying above, you would have thought that FFDShow would have over written the xvid codec as default.

Wish i could help you further, but besides above you seem to have tried everything i would have done in the same circumstances.

    Hi PD,

Thanks for reply and moral support! Yes, did reboot between each uninstall and install.

Really puzzling why Media Player Classic is unaffected, as I believe this is based on older version of WMP.

Media Player Classic only looks like old mediaplayer it is a whole different kettle of fish.

From what I have seen here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/100749 it looks as though it is a Directx error related to USB sound drivers. Remedy according to this site is to reinstall sound drivers for USB device and then reinstall directx.

    Thanks Efros,

The USB sound card doesn't have a driver - uses Microsoft default drivers for USB sound cards. Is there anyway I can update these?

I have already tried reinstalling DirectX; this made no difference.

The curious thing is my setup worked with earlier MP 0.2 versions. Could anything have changed in MP to cause my problem? In all other respects, my setup is working perfectly.

I suggest you build a graph with graphedit (google for it) with an xvid file, this way you can see exactly what pins fails to connect and how far it gets (I suspect its an avi splitter issue since I seem to remember MPC has inbuild splitters).

If you don't want to do this, try installing a third party splitter, such as Haali Media Splitter which might be enough to fix your issue (I would try that first actually).

And yes, MPC is a whole different thing from WMP :)

    Hi Inker,

You hit the nail on the head!

I've had a look at the filter graph using Graphedit. This is what the filter graph looked like:
    attachment.php

Playing around with the graph (and presuming shortest/simplest route is best!), I can get XviD to play:
    attachment.php

Now, how do I make this graph the default for all XviD's? It seems Graphedit cannot do this, or am I missing something?

    Thanks again, Deco.

What's interesting about the default graph is that it goes through MPA and that WM Speech En/Decoder. What type of Audio does the avi have (ac3 I assume?).

Try to replace only the MPA part in the audio route in the graph and leave the rest alone. The same for the WM En/Decoders (go from MPA out pin into AC3 Filter directly). Once the offender is identified we can start thinking about how to get rid of it.

If MPA is causing the problem then it might be a merit issues (there were problems with this in the past if I remember correctly).

    Hope this helps

    Hi again,

Inker: Yes, the XviD does have AC3 audio.

How do I or what do I use to "replace only the MPA part in the audio route in the graph and leave the rest alone"? 'Scuse my ignorance, this part of the process is new to me.
I don't get any video or audio with the default graph. My new graph works, but how do I make this 'stick' as default for all XviD's?

    Thanks again folks,

    Deco.
