I recorded a HD channel and when I wanted to play it back it would only play the sound but have a black screen.
Found out that it had something to do with tsreader and ffdshow not working together correctly so I installed coreavc 1.8.5 and used that as the HD decoder for TV and left the decoder for hd movies on ffdshow.

That worked.

HOWEVER. From that moment on, if I play DVD movies that are stored on my HD (VIDEO_TS folders, not mounted iso's because I don't have those, I always unpack the iso's instead of mounting them) something strange happens. It freezes the screen every 1 or 2 seconds and sometimes after the freeze it plays back very quickly for a brief moment as to sort of catch up to where it was.

I removed CoreAVC from the system but the problem remains.

I've tried switching mpeg2 codecs to ffdshow and back to mpv etc. Reinstalled ffdshow, videocard driver, haali spitter etc but nothing seems to correct my problem.

Everything worked great before I installed coreavc :(

What are my options? Because I reaaally don't want to reinstall mediaportal and/or XP again :(

OH and another weird thing I found is that when I press shift+1 to get the statistics running, HD movies play with 24fps but DVD movies seem to play with 19 to 22 fps, whereas the dvd's I have itself are sure to be 24 and 25 fps. Almost as if it's playing at a little too slow fps rate and makes up for it by freezing and skipping to it and or speeding up a couple frames to catch up.

PS: as a sidenote, I'm using the moving-pictures 0.6.5 plugin to browse through my movie-collection. Don't know if that is of any relevance. I asume not since it's just a UI to start playing a movie, and besides that it all worked fine with that before I installed coreavc as well.

UPDATE: I just found out it only happens when my tv is on 24hz refresh rate. If the TV is on 25, 50 or 60 hz there is no problem, but then my HD movies @ 24fps are not as smooth as they can be, which sucks.

Strange thing though is that if my tv is on 24hz refresh rate and I play back the same movie with videolan, there is not a single problem at all, so why does this problem occur in mediaportal?

I got the same type setup as you regarding playing DVDs from folders. It worked beautifully back in MP 0.2.3.0 (now I'm at MP 1.0). I don't know exactly what f**ked it up for me though :-(
It's just the DVDs that's a problem. HD-resolution movies in .mkv format works fine. Also playing the dvd-folder from WinDVD works fine.
I've tried to change the DVD codec in the dvd-section of MP config, but it seems that this sections isn't used when playing a dvd from a folder :-( I thought that my opt-out solution could be to lauch WinDVD as an external player, but obviously this doesn't work as the movies doesn't seem to be recocgnised as a DVD :-(

Did you find a solution yet?

No, I didn't find a solution yet, but implemented a workaround that works well enough for me.

I have the Harmony One universal remote and with that you can define your own custom keys on the touch screen display. I made a couple buttons on there called 24Hz, 25Hz, 30Hz, 50Hz & 60Hz. These buttons transmit a signal to my htpc that in turn are captured by the imon software. Imon is configured to trigger keyboard strokes (I used ctrl+ f8 to f12) and then I use a program called hoekey to capture these keyboard shortcuts and run a batch file. These batch files are nothing more than scripts to change the refreshrate. It uses a small program called SetRes. With that you can change resolution, color depth AND refreshrate.

It sounds a bit more complex than it really is, but it works fine. I can simply check the famerate of a movie with shift+1 (also configured as a button on the harmony remote touchscreen) and then choose the appropriate refreshrate with the click of a remote button.

The only problem that I still have is 1. you have to do it manually, but that's ok with me imo and 2. once I click a button to change the refreshrate, mediaportal stops playing the movie. I have to press play again and choose "resume" to continue watching where I left of. But both are minor issues.

I got my DVD playback going again. I reinstalled CCCP (my codec pack of choise) latest greatest version. Then I checked a box titled "Turn off DxVA(use this option if you have DVD navigation issues). It wasn't exactly how I'd describe my problem, but hey, it works.

Great that you found a solution as well!

I am actually pretty happy with my solution. It's very easy to tune the movie FPS to 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60 fps with the way i have it set up now, so I'm happy as well. Would be happier if it was possible to execute a script before playback, based on the movie FPS though, but heck, this works as well.
