I have read all the threads I can find here on this topic, but I cannot find an answer to my problem.
Basically my problem is that I had subs working properly with an avi file and external subs on the 0.2.2 stable release, but when I updated to the latest SVN, things stopped working properly.
Most importantly, I read the thread on adding the Vobsub auto-loading filter to post processing. This worked with 0.2.2 stable and got me up and running with subs.
Displaying the sub is not (entirely) the problem. It is turning them on and off that is the problem.
After updating to the latest SVN, subs would not display. The vobsub filter was still present in the configuration, and indeed I could see vobsub loading through the tray icon. However, a second vobsub filter had appeared under movie post processing in the configuration. I deleted the filters, re-added the auto loading one, and hey presto subs were displaying again. This behaviour was also mentioned in a previous post. However, I could not turn them on or off with L. Also, whenever I go back into configuration, the second vobsub filter is added, and if I exit with deleting this, subs stop displaying.
I read in one of the posts that mkv's with internal subs work better. So I ripped a DVD and encoded it with subs using MeGui. The mkv played fine, but I could not display subs in Media Portal. I could however, display subs if I played the mkv in MPC.
I read in another post ffdshow could be used to display subs in MP. So I deleted the vobsub filter and added the ffdshow filter in MP config and turned on subtitles in the ffdshow config. Now I have subs displaying for both avi's and mkv's, but again, I am unable to turn them on or off with L (or the appropriate button on the RC).
So, in summary:
With the stable 0.2.2 build and vobsub filter enabled in post processing, I could get avi's with external subs to work AND they would turn on / off with L. I am unsure if this filter worked with mkv's on the stable build, as I did not test this, but suspect vobsub on it's own cannot handle mkv's per my findings below. Also, I am fairly certain I could go in and out of config, and even though the second vobsub filter appeared, it did not stop subs from displaying

Using ffdshow with subtitles enabled in ffdshow config works for both avi's and mkv's, but I still cannot turn the subs on or off in either case.
Sorry for the long winded description on my path to troubleshooting this problem, but I did want to document my findings in the hope that somebody can provide a clear answer on how best to configure MP to display subs (I think the answer is ffdshow filter to ensure it works for both avi's and mkv's) AND get them to turn on / off.
