Problem with upmixing with bass to SPDIF (1 Viewer)

Hi There

Just got the 0.0230 installed, and it solved a LOT of small issues for me, ISO playback, better music database etc.
I still have some minor issues, eg. I HATE the default graphics put on the artist if the artist is unknown ;-)

And one thing still puzzles me, and my guess is that it's as designed...
I send my audio via SPDIF, so that I can let my Sony Amp do the conversion instead of relying on the lowly soundcard, this gives me some other problems. One problem is upmixing from stereo to 5.1/7.1, this doesn't work (the BASS player is used).
My worry is that it is as designed, otherwise I really need a hint on how to make it work.

I get 5.1 audio fine from my movie collection...

Do you really need upmixing then?
when you send via SPDIF you want the Sony AMP do the upmixing for you. Right?
so in this case, no need to upmix i would say.

I see your point, but I don't want the amp to upmix my movies, only the music, and then I have to switch around on the amp for each type.

It's not a big issue, it's just puzzling me.

I'd love to be able to upmix stereo streams to 2.1, that is, redirecting bass to the subwoofer channel. My amp doesn't do this on it's own with a 2.0 stream. I'm aware that Creative's drivers have a bass redirection setting, but that affects playing movies in surround as well and I only want it to affect stereo streams, i.e. music.

I don't quite like upmixing music to surround. Unless it's mastered in surround, it should be played back in the original stereo format through stereo speakers. I don't mind adding some extra sub-bass though.

I also want to upmix my 2.0 to 2.1 but i want to use the analogue outputs on my soundcard not spdif.

Is there a way to upmix 2.0 video and audio in MP to 2.1 and leave 5.1 audio or video alone while using the analogue outs on the sound card as the sound source.

I am building my own 5.1 Amplifier with custom enclosures to make a very simple and pretty looking setup , amplifiers of these days just have too much flashing lights and stuff , and the simpler cheaper stuff sounds like !@#$%

You're quite right with the blinking and flashing, I chose the Sony STR-DA3200ES which is a very simple design, but a complex design inside.

Yes, a 2.1 upmix would be ideal, still I would like it through the SPDIF

I'm also using analogue outputs. SPDIF is giving me all sorts of problems, mainly because my amp tries to decode stereo PCM streams into ProLogic II and all my music ends up in the center speaker. The only way for me to get around this is to use the analogue 5.1 inputs on the amp which have a "through" setting for sending everything where it's supposed to go. The problem with that is that then a stereo stream will end up in the front speakers and nothing goes out the subwoofer - that's why I need the 2.1 upmixing.

Wow, that sounds like quite a project! Sorry for going off-topic but I just have to say it sounds awesome. Wish I could find time to build stuff... I'd love to build a custom stereo tube-amp with a ton of watts one day.

There is some mixer stuff in die ffdshow audio configuration but I havent found a solution that works yet.....

This is also a concern I have,

I'm just assembling my media center (not all the parts have arrived yet) but need to integrate it with my current 5.1 audio system.

For the past year or so, I've been playing my music collection via an external Soundblaster Live 24 thru the coaxial S/PDIF out. The issue is that my older JVC receiver identifies the surround output from my DVD/VHS machine just fine (via optical S/PDIF), and correctly identifies my music output as linear PCM in the digital input. I get 2.0 output (no subwoofer) unless I switch off surround (giving 2.1 correctly) or switch to All-Channel Stereo (giving me 5.1 stereo)... but I don't want to keep switching my system every time I change from TV to Audio to Movies... it kind of defeats the purpose of integrating everything into one package setup. Upmixing the 2.0 stream (audio and TV) to 5.1, or at least 2.1, is paramount to my needs.
