You're going to need a splitter for mkv. Google "Haali".

Funny thing is I have never installed a codec before using Mediaportal, since I use VLC. So that can't be it. But since it works fine with you, I guess there is something in my system screwing up. And a reinstall probably is a good idea anyway.

Edit: Forget about it, thanks a MILLION Inker, Haali did the trick ;)

    Glad I could help :)

On a side note, I totally recommend against codec packs. Often enough they are the very source of playback problems. More isn't always better.

In general I agree, but I believe that some packs, like K-lite, is different.
    Wiki: FFDShow said:
Codec packs have been known to damage ffdshow's performance in the past. Some will override ffdshow or disrupt proper video display, and almost all will install outdated ffdshow versions. But not all packs are so bad. For example, the K-Lite Codec Pack and the Combined Community Codec Pack(CCCP) are always very up-to-date with the newest and/or best components and have been very well tested.
Not the most reliable sourc, I know - but it kind of confirms what I, and lots of others, think about K-lite.

    Included in latest K-lite (3.30)

I agree K-lite is great, I just use that and PowerDVD (for hardware decoding support of my HD2400) and that is really all you need.

As I look at the K-Lite codec pack, it's actually not a codec pack...more a "ffdshow allround solution pack" or something. It's just one codec, one splitter, one subtitles filter and one player, which should play virtually everything (without HW accelleration, which causes bugs in MP).

Actually, I think it's what some devs here are trying to make a plugin of!
As I understand it they are trying to make a plugin for MP to end all the confusion about codecs. This plugin will have FFDshow, HaaliMediaSplitter and VSfilter just like the K-lite codec pack...
I'm not sure if the devs are also trying to include some optimized settings for MP into the plugin...different settingsprofiles for different htpc-setups, that would be really great!!! :) :p
