Unfortunately I cannot help you with other media-center SWs, as recently I haven't tried any of them.
I really like MP and I'd like to keep using it ;)

BTW, mean while I have completely reinstalled XP with all newest drivers and MP.
It seems that the problem is now disappeared.
I have set the color depth to 32bits and the color to RGB (color profile is sRGB).

    Colour Banding...

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I have set my colour depth to 32bit, I could have sworn I set it to 32 when I reloaded my PC a few months ago. Maybe updating to the latest Catalyst reset it, I know it changed my res and scaling options. Anyway, that seems to have improved things, I have also changed to the YCbCr 4:4:4 colour profile as suggested by Grubi, thanks mate. I will let you know if this further improves it.

Another thing I found the other day (not sure if you guys already know, thought I'd share the wealth anyway) was a guide to upscaling using FFDShow, I created a separate up scaling profile and now I can force DVD rips and episodes of Lost etc to 1280x720 with no blocky effects or other graphical glitches! :)

Anyway cheers guys, I'm happy that I get to keep using MP :D

BTW - J River Media Center turned out to be ok, still prefer MP. J River has some nice menu animations once you switch to Theatre view, the default view looks similar to WinAmp. Its just not as configurable, MP pwns it!

    Langers,
do you have a link for that guide (evt in PM)? Thanks.
I found several, but up to now none of them was really satisfying.
I am currently using the Cyberlink decoder (7.3 Ultra) in overlay @ 1920x1080. The result is not bad ;)

    Archimede, heres that link,

    ProjectHTPC - HTPC Software Advice

Let me know how you get on, it apparently works for DVD (as the guide describes) but I can only get it to work for avi and not DVD yet. At the moment this doesn't really bother me as I tend to watch most films as a download, haven't watched any of my DVDs for ages now!

    Langers :)
