Proxy authentication thru .NET (1 Viewer)

Hi everybody

Unfortunately, my internet connection not only need to pass thru a proxy, moreover I need a user and password to access to internet.

First time any program need to access to internet, a Windows window appear asking for my user/password (Winamp, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc).

However, MP doesn't do that. In fact, do NOTHING internet related. I can't see weather, neither see trailers, etc. However, I can hear shoutcast streamed radio channels (window asking user/password appear).

I read .NET related posts on these forums. On that posts talk about some .NET variables, but my proxy configuration is correct (all programs but MP works fine).

Even when MP configuration tool (Setup Mediaportal) try to access internet, show me a fail like " .... make sure you are connected to the internet" on trying to configure some settings.

What's my problem?

Is it setup properly in your Internet Options?

Anyway regardless, you need proxy authentication, something that is currently not supported in MP. Its odd that ISPs require proxy authentication though. Anyway, one option is to setup a proxy server on your own computer, that does not require authentication, then setup this one up to forward requests to your ISP's proxy with authentication.

.NET supports proxy authentication; its just a matter of adding the code in to MP to support it.

.net uses the information filled in in your windows internet options (control panel).

MediaPortal automatically uses this, that's why you can't enter a proxy or something anywhere in MP. So there's no need to modify MediaPortal code.

But the guy needed proxy authentication - you cannot enter this in the Internet Options screen; only the proxy address and port.

Maybe you should try saving the proxy authentication details when you enter it the next time - use IE as this is where .NET looks for that sorta stuff.

By the other hand, despite I always mark "remember password" on that window, first time any program try to access internet, same question about user/password is asked by Windows. This happens to any system on my Corporate intranet, so I think MP don't automatically uses this, mPod.

However, as I said, MP NEVER ask about user/password. Simply show me messages like "cannot access internet" when some operation require internet.

All the rest of programs ask about proxy authentication, cause "Internet Options" is configure to use a proxy, and then they run fine, but MP doesn't ask anything.

If fact, I can listen shoutcast streamed radio channels in MP (a window asking user/password appear) cause is WMP who is trying to access to internet, not MP.

So, I think something is not going right in MP on access thru a proxy. I must remember that "Setup Mediaportal" can't access neither.

Some solution?

I don't know how your connection is set up but if it is similiar to a dialup/PPP connection go to Network Connections, right click on your connection and select properties.
On the options tab untick the boxes in the Dialing Options section.

My connection is ADSL, McChots, user/password is not required like in a dialup connection.

Seems like this is the way auf authentication used with his provider...

Very new to me, here you need the user/pass for the ADSL dial-up connection (entered in your router or your windows dialup), so no proxy and such a strang authentication is needed. It's the first time I hear this way a provider uses such.

I'm afraid you can't do anything in MP to work around this. This simply is not possible (at the moment), sorry.

I would go with samuel337's suggestion and setup a small local proxy on your machine, have this direct upstream with authentication to your ISP's proxy and then you set your applications to use your local proxy which you would setup not to require authenitcation. Just hit google for free windows proxy server and you'll find a ton of them.
