PureVideo, OR ffdshow OR both? (1 Viewer)

I've started using PureVideo only and looked perfect. Then I thought I could improve image sharpening using ffdshow.

I've read that using ffdshow, it pulls out the best from Purevideo.

Anyway I wanted to give it a try and installed ffdshow following the instructions here http://htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20763.

BTW it states that you must disable hardware acceleration...and I did it. Is this why CPU now is 90%???

Now the question.

Did anyone tried PureVideo With or without ffdshow and found any difference?

What is the best combination?

In my case I'm using a nVidia FX Go 5200 that apparently benefits partially from PureVideo, but it does.

Using also ffdshow it looks even better and at least I can sharpen the image. But CPU jumps to 90% and maybe losing hardware accelleration.....

Would like to exchange impressions.....

Now I'm confused. :)
I thought you could use PureVideo for watching DVD/MPEG2 and ffdshow for all the different AVI formats around (DivX, XVid and so on). So PureVideo would not be harmed by ffdshow at all.
That is how it's working here (at least I think it is), using a GeForce FX 5200, the newest PureVideo decoder and ffdshow.

Or are you talking about ffdshow post processing?
Or am I totally mistaken here?

You can use the nVidia Purevideo (or any other) decoder to decode MPEG2 and then use ffdshow for postprocessing the picture. For progressive material this gives a very nice picture if done correctly. There is a lot of information on the internet on how to set up ffdshow for postprocessing, here are links to a few guides:
FFDShow FAQ at avsforum.com
Using Avisynth LimitedSharpen pre-processing with ffdshow for DVD playback
HTPC - Trinn for trinn (Very easy to understand, straight forward setup. Can easily be applied to MP. The guide is in norwegian language)

Remember that tweaking ffdshow for the very best results can take a lot of time. Be patient! You will be rewarded...

The downside of ffdshow is that the MPEG decoder can not use hardware acceleration. In my opinion, not using ffdshow at all usually gives the best result for interlaced material (live tv etc.) because the latest generation of graphics cards have really good hardware de-interlacing and picture processing. I use a Radeon X1300 with avivo capabilities and it almost eliminates the need for using ffdshow at all.
