Radio and TV - why so different? (4 Viewers)

Background:
- My TV has a complete user interface with TV guide, recorded TV, time shifting etc.
- In My Radio you can only change channels.

Why can't the radio UI and features be more similar to TV? In my view radio and TV is identical, except that there's no video coming from the radio. My Radio does currently offer an extreme ease of use, but I would like the same features that apply to TV to apply to radio. Timeshifting, recording, EPG etc. I believe the UIs could be more or less identical, but where My TV shows TV preview one could have the radio channel list.

To take this idea to the extreme one could have "My Broadcasts" with a unified UI for radio and TV instead of "My TV" or "My Radio".

Anyway, this is just an idea for future development, what does other people think about this?

Best Regards,
Lars E.

I think from a WAF factor... it won't be highly accepted.

In my opinion, radio and TV needs to be sepperate. BUT, what is needed is internet radio needs to be added into the Radio plugin and internet TV needs to be added into the Television plugin.

Just adding my two lowest monetary units

Isn't this already true? As far as I can remember I added my webradio-stations in the radio plugin :? .

Really? If that is the case then I'll look into adding it. That was the only reason I never used the Radio plugin. My wife would have never found it in another place.

    Thanks

I agree with you Lars.E. It feels as if the radio part is there just so it can be in the features list. Time-shifting, EPG and advanced recordings would be nice. But perhaps there is no great demand for this.

Joining TV and radio would be confusing to me, and I think my wife would dismantle the whole HTPC in protest.

As for the other features, I think this has been talked about in other posts and recording radio is a definate want. Timeshifting seems less useful to me (in TV as well), and I'm not entirely sure there is a standard for radio stations to broadcast their schedules, so and EPG might or might not be useful.

Internet radio, digital radio and satellite radio are all items that are or need to be addressed in the radio portion to bring it up to the present.

I AGREE! IP TV should bee watched in the "My TV"-section (not as "My Radio" or "My trailer" or whatever....)

The IP radio is allready ok, I think :?

Lastly, but most important, TV and radio must never be "one" joined function/plugin!

Just to make myself clear, I dont wan't radio and TV to be found under a 'My Broadcast' button. I just think that the Radio part isn't as "hot" as many of the other plugins.

    I totally disagree...

I also wonder, why TV and radio are handled differently.

OK, it might be necessary to explain this to some 'less-technical-oriented-users' but I would really appreciate having both together.

It's also confusing for me, why settings (i.e. frequency etc.) are stored in different databases..

For me, both are the same (except for the TV screen).

Why don't we have Radio-EPG, Radio-Timeshift, etc. when it's all the same from technical view.

    Just a suggestion.

    moltas,
I agree, the demand for radio isn't as high as for TV. I believe the functionality would be useful though. Radio works so I'm happy.

    marshall,
EPG for radio would have to be a solution like webepg. EPG exists for DAB, but few have that. Timeshifting might not be as useful for radio, I mentioned it as I believe functionality for radio and TV should be as similar as possible. That way it could share lots of code as well.

    Uli321,
I think people are afraid of a cluttered UI and radio and TV channels interspersed. Even I am not sure if this is the right thing to do, but with the correct design I believe it could be nice. A safer bet is to make them equal, but separate.

    Best Regards,
    Lars E.
