    Lars E.: RDS has nothing to do with traffic

    RDS = Radio Data System

    Most stations use it to transmit the station name, so the Radio will not show 92,20 but SWR3 or the like.

    Radio Data System
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Radio Data System, or RDS, is a standard from the European Broadcasting Union for sending small amounts of digital information using conventional FM radio broadcasts. The RDS system standardises several types of information transmitted, including time and station identification. RDS is standard in Europe since the early 90s, but less so in North America.

    Radio Broadcast Data System is the official name used for the U.S. version of RDS, though the "RDS" name seems to be at least as common in usage. The two standards are nearly identical, with only slight differences, mainly in which numbers are assigned to each of 31 musical and other programme formats the RBDS system can identify. RBDS was approved by the NRSC, RDS by the EBU.

    For germany i can say that this would be legal!
    If you record from analouge radio it is the same as if you record from internet / dvb-radio, ... etc.

    And for that to be legal are the fees for the official radiostations (here in germany it is the GEZ).
    You also pay an ammount of fees for this institiutions (like GEMA, etc.) when you buy a device (radio / tv-card / ....).

    I have already seen some software on the internet for recording dvb-s radio complete with automatic cutting, id3tag from epg info, etc...

    No, not directly, but the ID sent as part of the RDS stream makes it possible for the reciever to find the same channel on a better frequency as you move through the landscape. Thus, RDS in my opinion really becomes valuable when you use it in your car.
    But, of course, getting station names automatically on the living-room htpc is nice as well.

    I'm not sure how traffic announcements are handled, but thought they used some RDS info as well.

    In addition some radio-stations show the running title and artist. That would be a great feature

    why are TV and Radio section so different? good thread title! The simplest stuffs don't work in Radio:

    cannont use the defined channel groups (EPG shows all 260 channels! always, even if I uncheck them!

    Hi,

    There have been many improvements in this area for the upcoming 1.2.0beta, and there are even more improvements scheduled for 1.3.0.
