OK, but that assumes MP does something with what it reads out of the registry.

Changing to another codec like PDVD instead of ffdshow should prove that it is ffdshow that's the problem. A screenshot from graphstudio would help to confirm too.

No luck with PDVD either, Haali shows no change and subtitles don't work either. Was Haali working in the previous versions of MP or SVN?

I think that might prove that it is MP that is by default selecting the 1st audio and subtitle track, rather than using the Haali preferences.

I've been using Haali and mkv's since 0.2. something..... just not sure if MP has ever used the Haali preferences. I personally couldn't say, because I've never configured them. As I said, I always used the remote to change the subs or language if I needed to. It's pretty rare that English (the only language I speak, much to my chagrin) isn't on track 1. Maybe something that never got fully implemented or got broken somewhere along the line. A bugreport would be the way to go.

Haali preferences have never been used in MediaPortal.
For subtitle control you should use DirectVobSub (VSFilter 2.39) and set the preferred language accordingly in MediaPortal's configuration.
As for any sneeky registry info, MediaPortal does look and present subtitle info etc from embedded MKV subtitles to present and select in the gui accordingly.
Maybe that has something to do with it...
I have tweaked subtitle handling in 1.0.1 (or latest SVN), now:

    1. When subtitles are not enabled, VSFilter will not be loaded even with embedded subtitles - thus allowing DXVA hardware acceleration.
    2. Choosing the subtitle language in configuration will now select the appropriate language in the MKV if present.

I don't know where it went wrong, but for myself it's clear: Mediaportal + Haali + PDVD8 + MKV-playback is impossible to get to work. I've just done my 4th fresh Windows installation in two days (always ensuring no old codecs remained active for some reason) and it's been impossible to get it to work.

    What did I do?
    1. Install Windows, drivers, updates etc.
    2. Install Mediaportal.
    3. Install Haali.
    4. Install PowerDVD
    5. Select PDVD8 codecs for h.264 in Mediaportal configuration.
    6. Test run.

Won't work. Using Mediaportal 1.0 Finaal. Both in Vista x64 and Vista x32 (@ Gigabyte 780G motherboard, 2GB, X2 4850+) it doesn't seem to be working. After pressing play screen goes black for ~2 seconds, then returns to the menu. I just don't know what's the issue. Definitely nothing with old codecs because the Windows installation is as clean as it can be. It used to work before though, RC2 etc. I'll try CoreAVC whatsoever till someone figured out how to fix it, because I don't know what to do else.

No one can help you unless you:

    1. Provide a MediaPortal.log
    2. Explain the Haali version.
    3. Provide a sample clip

Otherwise this is just a random rant on the forum.
You'll only get help if you provide information for people to evaluate your issue.

I could upload one that will split with haali with my problem of getting the wrong audio because MP is defaulting to the first audio track (if MP would configure to allow you to select a default audio language that would be awesome), but my mkv files are kinda huge, I think most of my dual audio ones are 240-300megs

That's fine, please upload it to the FTP site (see wiki) and I'll look at it when back from Australia. Just let me know the name of the file.

    Try latest SVN.
We now allow you to set a preferred audio language in configuration.exe or the settings in the gui for videos.
