RC3 GUI Sluggishness after a few days (1 Viewer)

I just wiped my htpc and started over. I installed ATI 8.9 catalyst and I have an AMD 690g motherboard. With every version of MP after a few days, it begins to slow until the GUI is very jerky. It never stops working because of this, just text scrolling is near useless and its overall not a good user experience.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Any ideas? Is there a way to flush video memory via command line or perhaps some more advanced task manager to see what is gobbling up all the resources?

If i could just reboot without having to have the tv on (ATI won't detect TV) I'd just set it to reboot nightly and be done with it.

Could you check system memory being used by MP at the point where everything goes sluggish, might also be a memory leak causing this.

As far as i know there is no tool to reset the video card or its memory on the fly.

When application is closed the video memory is freed by the system (unless there is a bug on driver or OS level). This is similar as for the main RAM, its freed by the system when application is closed. No matter how much the application has been leaking memory.

I do have a similar problem, had been told that it was due to a memory leak which was solved in RC3.
But apparently it hasn't been linked with that issue. As for me I guess it is somehow connected with the TVService, since after like 1h I only can watch TV flawlessly, everything else is simply not usable, e.g. it takes 30s to enter the music section, or picture etc...
The problem occurred somewhere on the way to RC1...

I have the same problem as well, ever since I first started using MP (back at RC2).

Although, in my case, I'm positive it has nothing to do with the TVServer service as I have all of the TV stuff disabled (only use MP for music & downloaded vids).

Still, it gets sluggish after a while. Closing/re-opening the app doesn't change anything. The only thing that helps is a complete reboot.

Same problem here. MP has behaved this way for me ever since I started using it almost 2 years ago. Nvidia or ATI, doesn't matter, I've had both in my system. On my system, animations, scrolling etc becomes somewhat sluggish over time, but it's not enough to be a problem. Restarting the application doesn't clear it, a reboot does.

I do not use the tv services either. I use BeyondTV, which, btw. works very well, stays smooth with animations and scrolling even when MP goes sluggish.

I don't use the TV Server at all either. If i could just schedule a reboot and have ATI find the display that would be the best, but currently it doesn't.

So, if its not TV server, and other apps are smooth even when MP is chugging, and only a complete reboot fixes it - what is it?

I'm a technical analyst (granted its for database applications) but still the wheels are turning here and I think sooner or later we'll narrow it down and eliminate it.

Anyone have any thoughts as to the slowdown culprit?

I guess we'll need to find some commonalities. It must be something we all have in common, because if this was something everyone experiences, I'm sure we would have heard it by now.

I used to think it was skin related, but I've had the problem with Aeon, XFace and Titanium. Maybe it's the combination of plugins? I currently use Moving Pictures, MP-TVSeries and MP-RSSTicker. Perhaps the only way to find out is to do a complete re-install and let the base MP run without plugins for a few days...

I run TV Series and other than base MP - thats it. TV Series is an awfully popular plugin, so i'd be very surprised if that was it.

I was ready to blame ATI drivers, but apparently it also happens with Nvidia.

Few tips for troubleshooting:

- disable all possible plugins
- try if hibernate also solves the issue (hibernate causes a reset for the display drivers)

If the restarting of MP + TVE3 processes is not enough to cure the issue its highly unlikely that it would be anything in the MP / TVE# code that causes the issue.
