    Hi,

I am trying to install Mediaportal RC3 on my dad's PC but the installer crashes every time.

It appears to be crashing on the installing dot net redistributable thing.

The error message says something like "Unhandled exception error" as far as I can remember.

I installed the redistributable manually as well after the first crash just to check if that was the problem but it went without a hitch.

Obviously more info would help, but it is not my machine and I have been relaying instructions.

The system is XP pro (SP3), Nvidia GFX (can't remember which one but it has a recent driver), Terratec dual Cinergy card.

I have not applied the multi-card patch yet, not sure if this makes any difference at this stage.

Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this and a possible solution?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi,

So I got hold of the PC first hand and had the same issue.

"%1 is not a valid application" or something like that.

I installed manually by choosing to download and not install.

Even this partially failed and required me to download the correct files manually.

After install, MP works fine (apart from me putting an unstable MYSQL version on which MP TV server moans about on config start. Didn't have time to fix it though so I left it as it was working).

I read up on the error and it was something to do with missing quotes. Strange that it should occur on this PC but not on any of the others that I have installed RC3 on.

Suppose something else is wrong with my dad's setup but don't have the machine to muck about with and figure it out now.

    Chris

Remember .net does not automatically get installed by windows updates.

So you need to manually install all .net upto version 3.5 (needed for EVR as renderer in xp) and of course there relevant security fixes, not forgetting WMP11 and Directx August 2008 release.

not forgetting WMP11 and Directx August 2008 release.

Hard to forget as the installation of those is forced by the installer ;)

    @ chris:

does your dad's pc use a proxy to connect to the internet?
is the connection generally alive ?
is there another firewall installed besides the windows one ?

    Flo:

As far as I know, only the windows firewall and of course his router, but I have never needed to forward any ports to instal MP.

He is on AOL (hmmm), but his connection when his PC came visiting me was by my LAN cable. The install still failed.

I have been trying to get him to stop being ripped off by AOL for a long time now, but that is another story.

    ray:
He was missing one update at first, a service pack for .net but installing this didn't make any difference.

The DX and WMP11 installers were the ones that I had to download, as well as the re-dist for .net (as far as I can remember). The DX and .net ones had icons but were incomplete downloads. It wasn't hard to locate the files and download and install them.

I also cleared all known temp files before trying (although I think I may have missed the files for the installer that had failed as I was unaware of their location until after trying to install manually and getting the link for the folder in WMP11 section of the installer).

    Thanks,
    Chris

I had problems installing an earlier RC, when i had checked the "configure windows firewall..." checkbox. This should however have been fixed already in the following RC's.

Yeah I read about the firewall issue, but tried it both ways and with firewall both on and off, still suppose it could have been a failed download and partial install that left the temp files there because the installer crashed and was exited before the end.

That way if it fails because of the firewall, it will fail every time even with the correct checking of boxes/firewall settings(?).

    Of course only guessing though.

Personally I do not use windows firewall, and have successfully installed on all 4 of my machines without a hitch and without un-checking the firewall config box. Something which I have read should not work.....

    Thanks,
    Chris
