Record from 2 tv servers simultaneously to tv folder on nas simultaneously (2 Viewers)

Hi, I'm a newbie to MP but am blown away by it's performance. I have a question regarding setup. It's not that I have encountered any problems, but I thought I would ask to see if anyone had advice. This forum has been so helpful as a place to quickly get access to all my questions.
I would like to use MP on two PCs, each with tuner cards. Does anyone know of any problems of having both machines recording to a shared folder on a NAS? I would very much like to use the centralized data functions of MP.

At the moment, it is not possible to have two PCs with tuners recording to one folder whilst maintaing consistent databases between the two systems. This will be possible with MP2 in the future though.

The main problem is that MP1 client-side can only connect to one TV server. You could of course accept that the TV Recordings database would be different between both systems, but setup each of the TV Server recording folders as shares that can be accessed by each client (but it is far from ideal).

The normal way to do things is to put both TV cards in one PC and then get the second PC to wake the server PC up when it is switched on (the server can also have the client software installed too).

Thank you so much for your lightening fast reply. that was just the info I needed. The functionality & picture/sound quality that MP provides is so good that I want to get heavily involved in this. I certainly don't consider having to have independant record folders a problem.

It's partly due to existing architecture that the tuner cards are on two machines.
I will try your suggestion to figure pros & cons of that setup.

I still need to fully explore MP1 before I look at possibilities of MP2..although I have downloaded alpha & can't wait to try. Just wish I could squeeze few more hours in the day

MP2 is not really an option for running on a real-world system right now because it is too early in the product development cycle, so definitely concentrate on MP1.2.2.

I am currently working on a setup guide to MediaPortal on AVForums. The MP Wiki has everything you need to know, but there are lots of people on AVForums that keep asking questions about MP so I thought it would be a useful exercise (to help entice people to try MP). You might find some of it useful as a newbie: http://www.avforums.com/forums/home-entertainment-pcs/1602323-medaportal-setup-guide.html (although it is only about 20% complete so far, but it should be helpful even in its current format).

Once again you have completeley figured my needs..almost telepathic!

My day job is as CEDIA installer for a retail shop. But by night I love computer based audio (listening & producing).
I've always kept my machines segregated (music/AV), but have now found a way of tying it all together with an
incredibly slick interface.

I can't beleive I haven't come across this project before.

So blown away by performance that I'm in process of installing MP1 on all my home machines (2 x Win7,4 x XP).

Once I've got more of a handle on how it all hangs together, I hope to get involved or help with plugin development.

I have a question that I'm not sure who I should direct at. I have a client at work who owns stunning HTPC hardware,
but hates the WMC UI. I can see that due to all the performance improvement I've acheived on my home setup,
that he would love MP1 on his system...and I want to see/hear StreamedMP on his hardware..it would be devastating.

What is community point of view on him installing MP1 on his machine, and I charge for time spent configuring it's interaction with
commercial third party software? (e.g. anydvd hd,videoredo,etc)

I've been a lover of computer entertainment for years, and MP1 just keeps making me smile.

Can't wait to discover more!

From what I understand, there is no problem with charging your time for doing work for someone, even if the work includes installing MP. As long as you are not actually charging for MP itself (which it sounds like you don't intend to). Clearly the end user (your customer) will have to agree to the terms and conditions of use of the software, but this is no different to any other product running on her system. I am sure the community would be delighted to see the product being used in a commercial setting!

I will drop an email as suggested. Certainly not intending to make any charge for MP, just want to check how land lies regarding ethics of basing commercial solution on community software.

I know I have loads to learn about MP, but everything has been so logical to me, that I do hope to able to contribute to the project in some way. Have lots of hands-on experience in integration, networking and graphics/setup of various brands of remote/control systems, so I look forward to keeping in touch with the forum.

MP really has made this slightly cynical installer smile..a lot!
