This problem is caused by DScaler not coping with an aspect ratio switch "in-stream". US shows are usually transmitted in 4:3 whereas the ads are in 16:9. When the aspect ratio switches DScaler hangs up.
I had exactly the same problem you describe. I resolved it by switching to PureVideo.
I don't think the free codecs are much cop. DScaler has the aspect ratio issue you experience and also doesn't handle glitches in DVB-T streams properly which causes stuttering and skipping. MPV doesn't appear to do 16:9.
For me, PureVideo is worth every penny - it works perfectly even on my non-Nvidea GFX card.
