I'd still like you to try the suggested test (playing recordings that is hosted on the client) please. The point I'm concerned about is the network link, not the NAS. A network link will introduce additional latency, and may make latency more variable (depending on the reliability of the network). Latency is the reason why players can struggle to play a 10 Mb/s file over a 54 or 150 Mb/s wireless network. You would think the bandwidth should be enough... but bandwidth is somewhat beside the point. This is also why I'm not surprised you observed the same problems when the recordings were on the server, and why I'm specifically asking you to try playing a file that is hosted on the client. As above: I'm concerned about latency/reliability, not bandwidth. Wireless and power line can be particularly problematic. Transferring/playing a Blu-ray is very different to live TV (ie. it isn't a fair comparison). With a Blu-ray (or any other static file), the whole file is available for the player to buffer. In other words, the player can read ahead as much as it likes. This buffering can mask latency issues. I mean, if the network is slow (high latency) for a moment it usually doesn't matter, because the player should have enough content in its buffer to continue play until the issue passes. With live TV, there's a limited buffer size so the data must arrive in a timely fashion in order to avoid problems. My understanding is that MP's playback for recorded TV is similar to live TV in that it doesn't use a particularly large buffer. Owlsroost can correct me if I'm wrong, Please post fresh log files from a client, and a screenshot of the LAV video settings.
