Recording when a program is not in the EPG (1 Viewer)

I have been looking to duplicate functionality in our DVR. Basically, it allows me to enter a string of text that it then searches for in the program guide - using the title of the show or, optionally, the description. If the search finds that string of text, it will then record the show, if the search does not find that text, the search remains persistent, and the next instance of a show with that text is automatically scheduled to record when a hit comes into the program guide.

I have been looking at the instructions on setting up a scheduled recording, and perhaps I am mistaken, but it looks like the entry must always be in the EPG in order to set up a recording schedule.

Is this correct? To schedule a recording that is looking for a show title or a partial show title, do I have to wait until that show is in the EPG, or am I missing something about making a search persistent so that when a program with that text comes into the EPG, MP will schedule it to record?
