Hi, I certainly agree with you. Your advice is really very helpful for us.
Thanks a lot!

I tried MCE Buddy with Comskip but never got it to work successfully. :-(
I also tried copying my working Comskip ini file into the MCE buddy folder but that didn't help either.

One thought I have just had is that maybe the version of Comskip that is bundled with MCE Buddy is old or different? Maybe replacing all the Comskip files in MCE Buddy with a newer and known working version might fix it?

Cheers,

That's not it unfortinatelly. I try to do everything possible before posting (should have included that in the first post). I checked the comskip .exe versions and they were identical. Nevertheless I did copy the working comskip setup I have with MP to MCEBuddy and it did not produce a result.

I will run another test because it is strange.... Comskip in conjunction with MP works perfectly! The same comskip setup with MCEBuddy does analize the file and create some comskip files, but doesn't cut the commercials with those files and when you then view the file in MP again with the files created with MCEBuddy, the ads don't get skipped. I'm going to have to do a comparison between the files created and see what is actually going wrong there. Seems strange.

Would be great if it worked though. Would be VERY handy for a HTPC, I could then automate a solution to copy the files to my server and added to my archived TV database.

Perhaps it just doesn't work in MCE Buddy (contrary to it's claims)?
Anyway, keep us posted as I am sure many people would like to have ad stripping and automatic compression to MP4/H.264 format...

Either that or I'll just have to invest in more diskspace... Who would have thought that 1TB of diskspace is not enough for a HTPC? hehehe ;-)

Most of my recordings are only temp... If I want a copy I find a copy, not record, but i'd love to have the machine strip ads and compress automatically just so it makes it seem more amazing.... Some of my friends are still amazed that ads can be skipped automatically.

I will see what happens here...

So i've been looking for an alternate way of achieving auto compression and add removal but haven't come up with anythinng so far. There is plenty of talk on the subject but most people either seem to have the process compress and move their files immediatelly or do some manual editing or manual starting of the process.

After thinking of how I use my system i'd like to put forward the type of system i'd like to implement and hopefully some people have some suggestions or even have something already sorted.

MCEBuddy is basically spot on how i'd like to have the system work, only it doesn't use the comskip processing properly and I don't think the dude is active on that project.

Most recordings I make are only temp for a week or so and then are deleted. I have 300GB reserved for TV recordings so space is not the issue. If I want to keep a show I would like a nice Divx/Xvid/Mpg file. If I choose to keep a file I will just leave the recording on the HDD. I'd like a process that monitors the age of the files and then kicks off a script in the background that takes any file that is xx days old and then processes it (with the already created comskip files created using MP) then compresses it and moves the file. I'd be happy with a script that just makes a check once a day for files and if it finds old enough files, it then processes the file and deletes the original (if set to do so).

I have read a few threads with similar processes as above using mencoder, comclean, dirmon etc but I don't know how I would be able to apply this to files that are 14 days old and not recent recordings. I would have thought this would have been something most people that use MP with TV would have had sorted already.

I will come up with a solution, I always do. But if I can get some help or pointers it would make it much easier. I am not looking for perfectly edited files or anything, just a way to save files for later. I can manually edit files I want to keep.
