Recroding Quality (1 Viewer)

Before using mediaportal I used XP MCE. When I recorded using XP MCE the picture was nice and smooth. In mediaportal, when the characters or stuff moves around there are lines that go across the moving object which disappear when that object is just standing still. Even when somebody is talking, lines go across that person's mouth until they stop talking. How do I make the picture quality smooth like XP MCE?

More specifically the lines are thin horizontal lines that are the same color as the object. For example, if spongebob is running from his house thin solid yellow horizontal lines will go across his body alternating with what is supposed to be there until he runs to his destination. These lines are exaggerated when I convert the videos to the 3GP format so I can view them on my phone.

My TV tuner is an ATI Theater Pro 550 (originally ehome wonder but it says theater pro 550 when you take it out and look at it). Latest drivers installed.

This is because the stream is interlaced. You need a deinterlacing capable decoder and transcoder for your 3gp videos

This also happens when I conver to avi (to cut commercials and reduce the file size). Which decoder sould i use? I have ffdshow set as the decoder in the media portal configuration. When I convert to avi or 3GP I use XVid to compress the video. What is interlacing?

Interlace

in ffdshow video configuration tick the "deinterlace" box on the left and choose a method on the right.

For conversion there are various tools with various deinterlacing options

I tried using the deinterlace option in ffdshow but it didn't help very much. Can media portal record without deinterlacing because media center in XP can.

In MPConfig>Television you can set deinterlace mode for live TV, ffdshow will work if you set ffdshow videodecoder as your postprocessor in MPConfig>Videos>Video Player for playback of recorded programs.

If you are converting to MPEG-4 you really should deinterlace when you re-encode, AutoGK does this automatically, other programs should also have this enabled either as an option or by default.

For TV viewing in MP, you should be using a video decoder which uses/supports the hardware de-interlacing on your 8600GT video card - e.g. PowerDVD7/8 (maybe PDVD9, but I've not tried it)

Unless it's changed recently, MediaPortal actively blocks using FFDShow for MPEG-2 live TV decoding because of compatibilty problems.

I have the following MPEG-2 video decorders:
    -ATI MPEG Multiplexer
    -ATI MPEG Video Decoder
    -ATI CC Multiplexer
    -PDVD9
    -MPEG2 video decoder gabest
    -ffdshow

I tried recording the same show with PDVD9 and I still have issues with interlacing. Should I pick an ATI decoder? The issues happen when I cut out commercials with Nero Vision. It still has the interlacing issue. The issue is still there when I play the recorded TS file in windows media player.

The ATi decoders are old and not especially good quality, the MPC/gabest decoder doesn't support hardware deinterlacing so I'd go with PDVD9.

I notice you are running composite video out to the TV - I don't know what happens with the hardware deinterlacing in this case, I've never tried it, and I've no experience with XP MCE either.

Does live TV viewing look OK, or does it have the problems ?

The 3GP encoding/deinterlacing is a separate issue from the viewing problems in MP.

If this is analog TV capture, it's possible that XP MCE was turning on de-interlacing for capture on the Theater Pro 550 card - I don't know if/how you can do this in MP.

I am not viewing the recordings on my TV, but my monitor (Dell E176FP). I just put that information in case it would be useful. According to the internet my Theater Pro 550 doesn't have hardware deinterlacing. On the PDVD9 settings I can choose force bob under video mode. Should I select that because I read on 100fps.com that it is fairly descent at deinterlacing.
