Mediaportal has 2 ways of recording
    - content recording
    - reference recording

So whats the difference between the two?

    Content Recording:
This type of recording is made when you select a program to record in the tvguide. So its used for 'scheduled' recordings. MP will begin recording when the programs starts and stop recording when the program has ended. A single file will be written to the harddisk

    Reference Recording:
This type of recording is made when you press the 'Record Now' button in my tv. So its used for 'manual' recordings. MP will check whats the current program for the channel you're recording and what was it start and end times. Then it will check how much of this program is present in the timeshifting buffers and record as much as possible from the timeshifting buffers. Recording will stop 2 hours after pressing 'Record Now' and instead of a single file, multiple files will be written to the harddisk

    Lets have an example
    1) Lets say its 20:00
    2) You goto my TV
    3) you're watching TV channel RTL4
    4) On this channel there's a movie lets say The Matrix
    5) The Matrix starts 20:00 and ends at 22:00
    6) after watching 30 minutes it is now 20:30
    7) you press 'Record now' (at 20:30)

What happens then is that MP knows The Matrix started at 20:00
and that it is now 20:30. So it will look in the timeshifting buffers and record/copy everything it has from 20:00-20:30 and offcourse records 20:30-22:30
That way MP will record as much as possible from the program when you press Record Now
btw:The timeshifting buffers can hold 200 mins of live tv
