I have a few questions about dynamic refresh rates. I hope this is the right place to ask. I have a Samsung LN46A650 screen and and ATI 4600 card. Currently the supported refresh rates are 24, 59 and 60.

I notice that there are quite a few settings that use 50hz. Do I need to change those to something that is supported?

If I do have to change it should I just set it to 60?

Thanks and input or further explanation would be great.

i im fairly sure if you're display supports 24p it will support 50. i can;t see why not. unless its just something you guys in the USA haven't bothered with on your displays. if you don't watch uk/jap/euro imports i can't see why you owuld need it.

if you're in the uk you tv will def support 50hz.

    I'm from a PAL country, but my (%&#@) TV don't support 50 Hz @ 1080p.

I live in the USA. My TV is a Samsung LN46A650 and I am running vista. I did some more digging on the Samsung site and it looks like the TV does not support PAL content. If that is the case do I just put 60 in place of 50 in the refresh rate changer settings? I guess its my only option.

im really suprised that if your tv does 24hz and 60hz that it doesn't do 50hz

if indeed you can't do 50hz then you should use 24hz for PAL (24hz x 2 = 48 which is close to 50hz) actually you should try both 24hz and 60hz and see what you prefer.

even if your tv doesn't officially display 50hz it may still be able to input 50hz then do some fancy interpolation to convert to a different displayed hz rate.

Yea it is very odd, I think they intentionally gimped the Samsung A650. There is some info about the lack of support on the Samsung site. What sucks is that the A630 series supported 50hz without problems. I ended up returning the TV to amazon after a few weeks for a full refund (Woohoo Amazon) because there is a very specific bug with that TV. When it is connected to a PC via HDMI the Auto Motion Plus dejudder processing wont turn off. There are a few work around that sometimes work but it was unacceptable to me. Dujudder processing makes everything look like DV footage...very unnatural. Some people like the effect but I could not stand it. I bet most people that strive to match the refresh rate of source content would not be pleased :).

Now the 650 is perfect in every other way except 50Hz support. You cant win them all I guess. I can't wait to see where displays are in a few years when I retire the Samsung to the bedroom.

Not a good solution as it will cause one dropped frame per second. So the video playback will be stuttering constantly. Also lot of PAL material is interlaced, so it would require real 50Hz, so there will be another 25 dropped frames per second (these ones aren't causing stuttering, but only reducing the motion smoothness).

If you aren't needing to have live tv with 50Hz refresh rate (most likely not as all broadcasts in USA should be non-PAL) I would recommend using a ReClock directshow filter to slow down the PAL content to 24fps (it still wont be as smooth as original, so best would be to use ReClock and 48Hz in combination).

yea i thought an explanation on reclock might be a bit too advanced for him.

first he should try just outputing at 50hz as the tv may interpolate

I have used Reclock numerous times. I was just looking for advice from people that might have the same display. Either way reclock is not an option with me running the latest SAF beta. So thats out. There is no need to use me as your excuse for giving bad advice.

if you want to use reclock it can actually be used with latest SAF beta you will just need to edit the merits and remove the post processing, you may miss out on some features like 6ch AAC. And i don't think it is bad advice to try the interpolation on your built into your tv, the best advice then is for you to get a new tv then.
