I ‘m not new to MP but I am new to “digital” TV I’m thinking of going satellite (Dish Network) but I want to make sure it will work with MP first. I have searched the MP forums and several other HTPC forums and have found conflicting information. (I’m mainly concerned about SD not so much HD channels) From what I have read viewing Dish Network TV on a computer requires you to use the STB and an analog PC TV tuner. The coax connects to the STB and you connect an s-video cable from the STB to the TV tuner. How dose the picture quality compare to just connecting the coax directly to the TV tuner when using regular analog cable? Does the picture quality decrease going from digital through an s-video connection? Will connecting the TV to the HTPC via DVI or HMI increase the picture quality from the STB? Also how do I control the HTPC using satellite? I have a MCE blaster and a Harmony remote can I use those? Or do I have to program the remote to control the STB?

Also I have read there are no available satellite TV tuners that are “certified” by any of the satellite companies to work on a PC. Yet I see from the wiki there are several DVB-S PC tuners available. Can I buy a DVB-S tuner and connect the coax directly into it?(by passing the STB) Is this supported by MP?(TVE3 or TVE2) I appreciate any ones input. THANX!

Yes you can do this.
I belive stateside sat's are working now with TVE3 only.
You may want to check with gemx.

According to the Wiki TVE3 supports Technotrend DVB-S cards with CI/CAM what models have CI/CAM I can't find any?


Also do any of the DVB-S cards with CI/CAM (supported by TVE3) support Nagravision CAMs ? THANX!

Look for the TechnoTrend budget cards i.e. TT-1500 or TT-3200. You have to buy a CI module which comsumes a PCI slot or floppy bay.
Nagravision is aok.

Also chat to ASiDiE & CommGuru to set your NA satellite expectations.

So the CI is not built on the board? Its an addtional PCI card? What Nagravison CAM should I buy? Will they all work with Fire/Floppy DTV or Technotrend cards? THANX! again.

No as already explained the CI is not built into the board.
If you want a solution like that then look at the floppy DTV which you can get a PCI bracket for or alternatively a Twinhan 1034.
I would recommend the FloppyDTV over Twinhan.

For Nagravision get the T-Rex CAM.

CAM compatibility with card and functionality for your sat provider is best found by google.com unless another user can put their hand up.

Hi, I am interested in doing exactly what nettech_gt is talking about, currently I have analog cable but will be switching to satellite (Dish Network) soon, and I too am from the States.
I just want to make sure I am understanding the above information correctly, as I came to this topic when doing a search for my question.
I need either a TT-1500 or TT-3200 card which supports TVE3, which I guess is some kind of encoding (im completely new to MediaPortal) then I need an additional card (such as the FloppyDVT) that is taking the satellite signal from the TT card and making into a signal MP can record and view on my media center computer?
