Scrolling through videos listing, stutter, slow (1 Viewer)

Here is the dealio. I've been a long time supporter and user of Mediaportal. When I ran it on my previous machine (P4 3ghz Prescott with HT, 2gb of ddr3000) I had NO problems. What is happening is when I pull up the videos dir, in any view (covers, icons, list, etc) I get a stutter when trying to browse them. These movies are a mix of dvd images, xvid, dvix, and mpg. This happens with keyboard or remote. I have around 192 movies, all with cover art. No DB setup. I have adjusted the thumbs in the config to the lowest setting to no avail.

Example, I open up mediaportal, I get the movies opened up, and I start browsing with my remote down, it goes down to the end of the viewable screen, and just stalls. I actually had Vista close mediaportal once because it was "not responding". I've went into the config, disabled, renabled, tweaked everything I could think of. I wiped it, clean install, same thing. I wiped it, installed vista, same thing. I DO NOT get this on Media center (xp or vista) at ALL. I can browse smoothly. I know its a different coding, so maybe thats it. Any ideas on what to try?

Are you using dual boot by any chance.

asking because i finished setting up xp as dualboot and now my Vista Ultimate setup of MP is showing same symptoms, scrolling any list just stops responding, receiver lighting up as accepted remote signal and then after 15-20 secs allows you to scroll another 6-7 lines, before repeating delay again.

apologies, found to be remote batteries causing intermitant incorrect transmit of signal.
forget every 6 months they need recharging.

No dual boot. That sounds exactly what I am going through, but it also does it with the keyboard arrows and the scroll on the mouse. Hrm.....

It's very weird, very very weird.

The only thing it may be is Vista itself, as its definately needs a newer computer to run it.
Know with mine 900Mb of memory or more are used just on running the OS.

The sad thing is, I had XP Media Center on there before that, and it was the same problem, which is why I uppped to Vista. I'm going to try a fresh of xp sp3 this weekend.

I just did a fresh install of XP sp3. Same thing. I have no idea why this is happening. It's not related to my remote either, If I use the keyboard to scroll it does the same thing. It acts like its going to go through the list fine, and then about six movies down it just stops and it takes about 15 seconds for it to catch up.

Now it's completely pushing mediaportal into not responding when I got to movies. It has to be something in that folder that isnt agreeing with mediaportal. I don't have this problem with media center or xmbc.

and they all work fine, same folder for movies. I even took out all but 30 odd movies and even with that small of an amount, still stutter. I even made sure they were all the same format. This really sucks because to me, Mediaportal is the best HTPC soft out there, but for some reason, it just wont run on my machine.

I even added more ram, up to 1.5gb with a 2.1ghz proc, no difference. Every other program is flawless when browsing the movies.

Any ideas? Is there certain hardware that it is incompatible with? I've been using this prog for years now and this is the first time I've had issues.

Its a Asus A78NX-E delux mobo, AMD 3000+, 1.5 gb PC2700. 1 WD 300 for OS, 1 WD 250 for Movies (master-slave on primary). Nvidia PCI FX5500 vid card, using onboard Nvidia chipset sound drivers.

I'm at a loss, and it makes me sad to have to go and re-learn another program to use.

FWIW I've always found that MediaPortal is a very resource hungry program. There is a list of minimum spec's in the Wiki but for me personally they are sorely inadequate. I've resorted to slowly upgrading the HTPC to one which would be considered quite fair by many gamers standards, let alone the HTPC circles and am only just now having no noticeable lag problems.

The slowest machine i've been able to run MP happily on was a dual core AMD3800+ with 2GB PC3200 on Windows XP SP2 and a Nvidia 6600GT but no HD movies would play nicely so that pushed the upgrade.

So what i'm trying to say is that if you asked me if MP would run on your specs in XP i'd probably say no, but to give it a try and see how you go. And with Vista SP1 i'd say to not bother. Those are my opinions anyways.

I would definitely say that Mediaportal is hungry, but the problem is, in the task manager, cpu usage is low, and mem usage is adequate.
