I tried a while back to run MediaPortal on Windows Server 2008 but after several days without success I switched back to Windows XP. Now I'm wondering if I could run MediaPortal on a XP VMware virtual maching server on Windows Server 2008? Anyone know if this would work?

What I'm hoping to be able to do is to use a dynamic DNS client inside of server 2008 to be able to provide remote file access for my home file server. Though I if I understand the files used inside of VMware/XP would not be accessible to Server 2008 to provide remote access to recorded TV, is this a correct assumption?

Hi Robert, this (MP on vmware) will not work since vmware doesn't support directx/direct3d, but recently there is experimental support for vmware workstation.
If I understand you correctly, you want to be able to reach your MP files with the use of a dynamic dns client, right?
If yes, you could do this directly, without using server 2008 as a 'shell' unless you need 2008 for something else.

btw: you are able to reach your virtual machine anyhow - if your settings are ok.

I just wanted to follow up, I tried MP in a VMWare virtual XP machine this weekend on Server 2008 and it actually worked though I'd not recommend it, streaming video through VMWare Server lagged too much to be useful and was 'jumpy' (even with VMWare Tools installed). Not to give up on my setup I was able to get MP running on 2008 without needing VMWare Server or Windows XP, so that eliminated the whole point of my question, thanks Peter2 for the response!
