Btw: "real" Software RAID (done by the OS) outperforms those Promise/Chipset solutions in most scenarios and CPU load for RAID 1 would hardly be noticeable.

Only drawback of software RAID with windows versus linux is that you can't do it for the system partition itself.

Maybe a cheap external drive housing which comes with a RAID controller (not a full NAS) would be a solution as well if you plan to use it for media storage?

ive got the system on a seperate 80Gb HDD, so i dont have the headache of partitioning a section of the RAID for the OS, but cheers for reminding me anyway. ive read that linux provides a good OS software solution to setting up a RAID, but ive got no experience with linux at the moment, so it might take a bit of research.

i dont really want to set up a NAS style server, as i would like to put my TV card in the server itself sometime in the future so i can set up a second client. A NAS would obviously not allow me to do this.

can you recommend any other OS that would provide a RAID software option?
