set top boxes and ir blaster configuration (1 Viewer)

I have (forced by cable company) had to install a "digital converter set top box". I purchased a windows media center IR BLASTER to change the channels on the box.

How do I set this up in media portal? All around the country, cable companies are forcing customers to get these digital converter boxes so their TV's will still work (they convert a digitial signal to analog signal for analog TV's - like my Hauppauge PRV 350 Tv Tuner card, for example).

The cable companies are giving no choice in this. The days of directly connecting coax to your tv card are fast ending, and the necessity of IR BLASTER setups is becoming BASIC setup for PVR setups.

I need specific step by step instructions how to set up my IR BLASTER under Media Portal. I've searched around and cannot find anything on the subject.

You obviously didn't search properly, there are thousands of posts dealing with IR blasting. Hint: Look under community plug-ins for IR-Server.

Thanks for the reply. I'm brain injured and trying to figure out media portal without clear, step by step documentation on how to set up an ir-blaster, in the ORIGINAL documentation, will keep me from using this sofware.

Open source has a big documentation problem.At one time I was a 6 figure computer programmer and could have figured this out from stringing posts together in short order.

Now, with the brain injury, I'm like a "new user" with everything, and I have lost all analytical ability to analyze posts and come to conclusions.

I never noticed how poorly the documentation was for open source projects. I used to be a Linux head, and worked on the most complex operating system ever written, MVS (name as then changed to Os/390 when it became 32 bit, and now it's called Z/os and runs 64 bit).

At any given time I had 70,000 +users on at the same time with well over 10 thousand printers all printing concurrently.

I installed, troubleshot, repaired that operating system and was in the top 5% of all mainframe system engineers in the country.

Go to my website, Index and read the thousands of stories of other professionals (doctors, airline pilots, engineers, nurses, lawyers, etc.) ho have had their lives destroyed, like mine, by quinolone antibiotics.

I am in a position now to understand why windows will always be at the top of the heap for the home user. It supports all my hardware without me having to "fiddle" around (which I cant do anymore), it has an easy interface,and it works. Applying patches and installing software is so easy. Open source can not even begin to compete with the slickness, documentation,and support that windows provides.

Until somebody gets serious in the open source world about making installing products, customizing them, installing programs on their operating systems (i.e. linux), open source will remain just a hobby for nerds like I used to be.

Thanks for trying to help me, but I don't have the mental power to read through a bunch of disconnected posts on how to do something as simple as set up an IR blaster on a set top box. This information should be in the documentation for the product - with clear, easy to understand steps - OR should be OBVIOUS in the product itself on how to do it.

Too many open source programmers "want the glory" quickly, and get something out there that's nice, and say to hell with the work that's MOST important - DOCUMENTING the product properly.
