I've found an article at the MCE Portal about Extenders for the MCE

What are alternative media extension devices for MP ?

I'm looking into a solution to connect all TV devices through a media center.

Anyhow it looks to me that there are no real good solutions on the market right now, it only suitable device is the XBOX360 but apparantly this one is too noisy or is it also possible to use the XBOX 360 as an extender for MP ?

Quite interesting would be to use the Playstation 3 as media extender.

Which Extender is currently MP compatible ?

At the moment there are no media extenders that work with MediaPortal. As a programmer you are welcome to develop one.

Well I'm missing a bit the background of all this.

I've read a bit about existing extenders and there seem to be 3 types of it :

a. the rdp based
b. XBOX 360 which is apparantly the king because it can stream HTDV
c. IPTV or TV-over-IP

What solution would be best ?

a. Emulate an MCE on MP to use it with XBOX an all MCE Extenders ?
b. Take a IPTV Settop box and try to connect it to MP ?

The XBox can be used with XBMC, the precursor of MP and a seperate project. It can partially connect with MP by means of some python scripts. Don't know the details, but you might try searching this forum on this one.
