OK, before I post any logs and stuff, can I just check if this should work...

I have my media-centre PC set up downstairs in the lounge and for the most part, all works well.

I've started work on a skin, but I'm using my PC up in the spare room to save mucking up the tv machine... the problem I have is I can't point the upstairs mediaportal at the tv server on the downstairs machine. I'm not bothered about actually watching TV on it, but I would like it to connect so I can at least see the EPG for my skin development. The trouble is, if I set my downstairs machine in MP setup, first-off the MP config takes a while to OK itself and actually close, then when I run MP and go to TV guide it just sits for about 3 minutes before it goes back to the main menu.
From what I recall (not checked recently, and I've had this issue in all versions I've tried!) the TV Server log downstairs does show an incoming connection from the upstairs machine... but nothing ever happens.

Now, the machines are connected by WLAN, which I know isn't great, but I can copy files between the two computers and it works ok, so I'd expect the EPG to work, even if TV was choppy....

Any clues what to check? I've tried using the PC name as well as the IP address and no luck...

1) firewall setting (maybe disable to see if its working)

2)have you enabled "sql server browser" in services? given that you use mssql...

Firewall should be disabled on both machines...

SQL Server Browser- not sure. I'll enable this if not already. Does MP make a SQL Connection then? For some reason I thought only the TVServer did, but I don't know why... lol

yes, MP connects to the Database, so you need the sqlserverBrower activated. Usually this is not activated by default.

OK - your pointer helped a lot. Just dialled in from work )) and although the browser was running, TCP/IP was disabled on the SQL instance. So I enabled that and it seems to connect! Yippeee. Not gonna try TV over VNC (plus it defaulted to all channels rather than my group) but I'll do some fiddling tonight.
