This, as mentioned, is LOW power. Core2 duo E8400 @3GHz 4GB. It SHOULD be enough for the task...

It is enough... though the GPU is possibly more relevant than the CPU.

...I can play the videos with VLC.

My current theory is that you're running an N or KN version of Windows. I think VLC includes it's own renderers and may not even use DirectShow/DirectX... but any other program that relies on those frameworks and default Windows components (ie. the enhanced video renderer in this case) wouldn't work on those editions of Windows until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
