@Owlsroost Thanks for your quick response! Attached are screenshots of my LAV settings. The areas outlined in red were empty before; I filled them in after you had drawn my attention to the decoder settings. As a result, I can now hear foreground sound over the analog multichannel connection between my media center PC and my receiver, but not over the digital (TOSlink optical) connection, nor via headphones. This is the opposite of what I expected from reading the wiki page. My speaker layout is classic 5.1 (3 front, 2 rear & LFE), but I often listen to the audio via headphones. In my receiver, these depend on an analog stereo feed, which I could only get to work in parallel with the digital output by using a hack described here. The need for the hack apparently goes back to a change in the structure of the audio stack between Windows XP and Vista, which is discussed in excruciating detail here. I have read about other workarounds, including one using graphedit, but could never get any of them to work. JRiver appears to have solved the problem with their "Zones" feature, presumably by using the graphedit approach. Anyway, this is kind of a digression. The bottom line is that I now have at least one way of getting foreground audio, thank you! However, I don't get anything via headphones, despite trying a few other configurations.
