Some DVD iso will not play when accessed from a network drive (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I recently bumped into a strange problem which is as follows :
All my DVD are dumped as iso files, and are played in MePo through CloneDrive. Until a few days ago, the hard drive with the ISOs was set in an external case linked to the media center by a usb 2 connection. Disk was seen as the G:\ drive. Everything worked flawlessly.
Then, I built a new storage PC, plugged the ISO disk in it, and linked it to the media center via Gigabit ethernet. The disk is shared, and "mounted" in the media center as a network drive G:\ (yes, the same letter, so I do not have to change anything in my setup).

Here is were the "trouble" starts. With this new setup, I now have three different behaviors when I try and play a DVD iso, depending on the movie I try to start :
Case #1 : DVD plays ok. This is the case for most of the disks.
Case #2 : When movie is played, screen goes black, and stays black until I press DVD Menu button. Then the playing actually starts. This is the case for many disks. Not much, though.
Case #3 : When movie is played, screen goes black, and stays black. If I press any DVD button like the Menu button, display goes back to MePo GUI. Fortunately, this problem happens for a few disks only. But still, this is annoying.

I tried to dump the original disk again, with a newer version of AnyDVD, but with no luck. I also tried and change the DVD codecs in MePo, just in case.
If I mount the iso manually, it plays correctly in an other player (zoom player, which I used before I fell in love with MePo).
I could not try the manual mount with MePo though, because for some strange reason, I cannot see my Virtual Drive in MePo with the Play disc command (but I have to admit I did not investigate this very much).

The attached log files were generated and collected by MePo watchdog. When making the log, I successively launched three discs, one corresponding to each of the cases listed above
1 : Die hard with a vengeance, does not work at all. I end up pressing the DVD Menu button to go back in GUI.
2 : Armageddon, black screen then I press Menu so I get DVD menu.
3 : Daylight, which works ok.

I tried and have a look at the logs myself, but nothing strikes me. I would really appreciate any help on this subject.

Hi David

My guess is that it is a problem with the "DVD Navigator" (a Microsoft component used for determining the menu structure etc. for DVDs). You could try the Cyberlink DVD navigator which you already have installed, possibly also with a different video codec.

thx for the quick reply ! I already tried with Cyberlink navigator (this was suggested on another thread dealing with dvd not starting), and different video codec (tried dscaler instead of cyberlink8) but with no more success. What puzzles me is why does this same disk work perfectly when mounted locally ? Once the iso is mounted in CloneDVD, It would seem there is no difference between the file being local or on the network, right ? I also tried the E/S buffer option in CloneDVD but It does not work either.
I thought about trying with Deamon tools.
But I will make another try with different codecs (video, audio and nav), just to be sure.

Wrong - accessing the file over the network is totally different. Access latency will be higher for a start, but other differences will be present too.

I would suggest that you copy one ISO to the local machine, mount it with virtual clone drive and then find a combination of DVD navigator (either Microsoft's DVD Navigator or the Cyberlink one) and codecs that will play the ISO perfectly. After that, try to play the same ISO from the network location. If it doesn't work, then you know that either the DVD navigator or virtual clone drive does not behave the same with the networked location - that would be the time to try either daemon tools or other navigators to see if they behave better.
